## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

A temple festival near Mavelikkara, the Chettikulangara Bharani, is a vibrant religious and cultural celebration held at the historic Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple in Mavelikkara taluk, Alappuzha district. Dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy, the festival is celebrated during the Malayalam month of Kumbham, generally corresponding to February–March, making the original reference to an April (Medam) festival inaccurate. The celebration attracts large numbers of devotees and visitors and showcases the rich traditions, artistic heritage, and community spirit of central Kerala. One of the most distinctive attractions of the Chettikulangara Bharani festival is Kettukazhcha, a spectacular procession and display of enormous, elaborately decorated structures created by the 13 karas or local regions. These include towering Kuthira (horse structures), Theru (chariots), and large representations of epic characters such as Bhima, Hanuman, and Panchali, with some structures reaching around 90–100 feet in height. Their preparation and procession demonstrate the collective effort, craftsmanship, and devotion of local communities. Another important feature is Kuthiyottam, a distinctive ritual offering associated with the temple festival in which young boys perform traditional ritual dance accompanied by music and percussion. Kerala Tourism also records processions involving ornamental umbrellas and richly caparisoned elephants, so elephants and traditional percussion can indeed form part of the festivities; however, they should not be presented as the primary defining feature of the festival, as in the original description. The celebration also includes traditional cultural and folk performances, devotional rituals, processions, and community gatherings, creating a lively atmosphere for pilgrims and cultural travellers. The temple itself is one of Kerala’s renowned Devi temples, with Sree Bhadrakali as its principal deity, and Kerala Tourism describes it as a historic shrine believed to date back more than 1,200 years. The festival is therefore an important attraction for those interested in Mavelikkara temple festivals, Kerala culture, traditional temple rituals, Kettukazhcha, and Kuthiyottam. Visitors should note that exact festival dates can vary according to the Malayalam calendar and temple traditions and should be confirmed with the temple authorities before travelling.
