About this place

The Mattancherry gallery circuit is one of the defining features of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, India's largest international contemporary art exhibition, transforming the historic trading neighbourhoods of Mattancherry, Fort Kochi, and parts of mainland Ernakulam into an interconnected network of exhibition spaces where contemporary art engages directly with centuries-old colonial architecture and Kerala's maritime heritage. Organized by the Kochi Biennale Foundation, the Biennale is held every two years and is renowned for adapting restored spice warehouses, trading godowns, heritage buildings, galleries, and public spaces into venues for contemporary artistic expression. Among the principal venues is Anand Warehouse in Mattancherry, a historic warehouse that regularly hosts large-scale installations, multimedia works, sculptures, performances, and immersive exhibitions, allowing artists to create site-specific works that respond to the building's industrial character and historical significance. Another landmark venue is Pepper House on Bazaar Road, a restored heritage warehouse that has become one of the Biennale's most recognizable cultural spaces. Housing galleries, courtyards, a library, and community areas, Pepper House presents contemporary art exhibitions alongside workshops, public programmes, educational initiatives, and artist interactions, while its preserved architecture reflects Kochi's long history as a global spice trading port. On the mainland, the Durbar Hall Art Centre in Ernakulam serves as one of the Biennale's important exhibition venues, offering a more conventional gallery environment that complements the heritage spaces of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry and makes contemporary art accessible to visitors based in central Kochi. Depending on the edition, additional venues such as SMS Hall, Island Warehouse, and other restored warehouses and cultural spaces host rotating exhibitions, video art, student projects, performances, and collaborative installations, creating a distributed exhibition model that encourages visitors to explore different neighbourhoods while experiencing a wide variety of artistic practices. One of the distinctive characteristics of the Mattancherry gallery circuit is the close relationship between art and architecture. Rather than treating heritage buildings merely as exhibition halls, artists frequently create works that engage with the surrounding environment, responding to weathered walls, timber structures, old warehouses, spice godowns, and the historic streetscape shaped by centuries of maritime trade. Many installations explore themes such as migration, memory, colonial history, commerce, identity, ecology, labour, and cultural exchange, reflecting Kochi's evolution as an international port city while connecting local narratives with contemporary global issues. This dialogue between heritage and modern artistic practice has become a hallmark of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, attracting artists and visitors from around the world. During each Biennale edition, the gallery circuit is complemented by performances, artist talks, educational programmes, workshops, and community initiatives that encourage public participation beyond traditional gallery viewing. While the Biennale operates through a multi-venue pass covering its principal exhibition spaces, some venues, including Durbar Hall, have offered free public access during certain editions, helping broaden participation and making contemporary art more accessible to local audiences. Because exhibition venues and access arrangements may vary between editions, the Kochi Biennale Foundation announces the official venue list, visitor passes, exhibition schedules, programme details, and public access guidelines before each Biennale.
