## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Manachala Trek is a scenic guided nature trail in the Ponmudi hills of Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala, offering visitors an immersive trekking experience through the biodiverse forests of the southern Western Ghats. Conducted as part of the Ponmudi Ecotourism programme managed by the Kerala Forest Department, the trek is designed for nature lovers, beginner trekkers, bird watchers, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking to explore one of Kerala's most ecologically significant mountain landscapes in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. Located approximately 60 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram city, the trek begins near the Kallar or Golden Valley area, a gateway to the Ponmudi hill station renowned for its lush forests, streams, and rich biodiversity. The standard Manachala Trek covers around 6 kilometres and follows well-defined forest trails through dense evergreen woodland, rocky paths, and gentle ascents, making it suitable for beginners and casual hikers with a reasonable level of fitness. Depending on the ecotourism programme and forest conditions, the trek may also be combined with the Chola Forest Trail to create a longer route of approximately 12 kilometres, offering participants a more extensive exploration of the Ponmudi landscape. The complete trekking experience generally takes between four and six hours, allowing visitors to enjoy the forest at a relaxed pace while appreciating its remarkable natural diversity. Throughout the journey, trekkers pass beneath a dense canopy of native trees, medicinal plants, ferns, bamboo clusters, and climbers characteristic of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage region celebrated for its exceptional biodiversity and high level of endemic species. The trail also crosses small streams, rocky sections, and shaded clearings, creating a varied and refreshing trekking experience. The forests surrounding Manachala provide habitat for numerous species of birds, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals, making the trek particularly rewarding for wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers. Although wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, the Ponmudi region is known to support species such as the Nilgiri langur, Malabar giant squirrel, sambar deer, and several endemic birds found only in the Western Ghats. The peaceful forest environment, cool mountain climate, and absence of urban noise make the trek an ideal opportunity to experience Kerala's natural wilderness while learning about forest conservation and biodiversity. Unlike independent trekking destinations, access to the Manachala Trek is regulated by the Kerala Forest Department, and visitors are required to participate with authorized guides who ensure both visitor safety and environmental protection throughout the journey. The programme emphasizes responsible ecotourism by limiting unnecessary disturbance to wildlife and encouraging visitors to respect the fragile ecosystem. The post-monsoon and winter months from October to February generally provide the most pleasant trekking conditions, with lush greenery, flowing streams, comfortable temperatures, and excellent opportunities for nature photography. During the monsoon season, sections of the trail may become muddy and slippery, requiring extra caution and appropriate trekking footwear with good grip. Visitors are advised to carry sufficient drinking water, light refreshments, suitable outdoor clothing, and basic trekking essentials, as facilities are limited once the trail enters the protected forest. Since the Manachala Trek forms part of a protected forest landscape, participants are expected to avoid littering, refrain from carrying single-use plastics, and strictly follow the instructions of forest guides throughout the trek. Many visitors combine the trekking programme with nearby attractions such as Ponmudi Hill Station, Golden Valley, Meenmutty Waterfalls, Kallar River, and other ecotourism destinations in the Ponmudi region, making it an ideal addition to a full-day nature itinerary. With its beginner-friendly trail, guided wilderness experience, rich biodiversity, scenic forest landscapes, and commitment to sustainable tourism, the Manachala Trek has become one of the most rewarding ecotourism activities in Thiruvananthapuram district, offering visitors an authentic opportunity to discover the unspoiled beauty of the Western Ghats while promoting environmental awareness and responsible nature-based travel.
