## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Manarcad Perunnal, popularly known as Ettunoyambu or Ettu Nombu, is the annual eight-day feast of St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Cathedral at Manarcad in Kottayam district. Observed from September 1 to 8, the festival combines prayer, fasting, liturgical observances and large-scale pilgrim gatherings centred on the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, celebrated on September 8. Thousands of devotees visit the church during the feast, undertaking the traditional eight-day period of fasting and participating in prayers and other religious observances. One of the principal highlights is the Rassa, the historic procession associated with the feast and held during the final days, featuring the sacred golden cross and large numbers of decorated muthukkudas, or ornamental parasols, carried by devotees. The procession is accompanied by religious music and attracts large crowds, making it one of the defining public expressions of the festival. Another important observance is the opening of the sanctuary for devotees to view the revered image of the Holy Mother with the infant Jesus. The feast also includes Pachor Nercha, a traditional offering prepared with rice, milk and jaggery and distributed among devotees. Special prayers, religious discourses, devotional gatherings and other programmes take place throughout the festival period, reflecting the spiritual and communal character of the celebration. The church and its precincts become an important pilgrimage centre during these days, bringing together devotees from different parts of Kerala and beyond. The observance has a long-established place in the religious heritage of the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Christian community and continues to combine devotional practice with distinctive local customs. The decorated parasols, processions, sacred offerings and congregational worship create a visual and cultural expression closely associated with Manarcad’s annual feast. Traditional art presentations and other cultural programmes may also form part of the celebrations, depending on the year's arrangements. For visitors, the festival provides an opportunity to observe an important Christian pilgrimage tradition in Kerala, but the religious character of the occasion should remain central to the experience.
