About this event
Manappullikavu Vela is the annual festival of Sree Manappullikavu Bhagavathy Temple at East Yakkara in Palakkad, dedicated to Manappulli Bhagavathy, a form of Bhagavathy traditionally associated with Bhadrakali. Recognised by the Palakkad district administration as an important annual festival, the Vela forms part of the religious and cultural calendar of the city and draws devotees and spectators from the surrounding region. The festival is generally held in February–March according to the Malayalam calendar and begins with Kodiyettam, the ceremonial hoisting of the festival flag. The days leading up to the Vela include temple worship and cultural programmes, culminating in the principal festival celebrations. On Vela day, special poojas and other temple rituals are conducted, followed by the ceremonial procession of the deity. A distinctive feature of the festival is the participation of smaller Velas from neighbouring localities, including West Yakkara, Vadakkanthara, Vennakkara and Koppam, which converge as part of the main celebration. Traditional Kerala percussion occupies a central place in the festivities, with Panchavadyam, Pandi Melam and Panjari Melam accompanying ceremonial activities and processions. Caparisoned elephants are also traditionally associated with the Vela, forming part of the ceremonial spectacle. The festival includes other traditional elements such as Velichappadu, Vela Oottu and Deeparadhana, while cultural programmes may feature traditional performing arts. Fireworks, locally known as Vedikettu, are another established component of the festival and are conducted as part of the scheduled celebrations. The Kerala Tourism festival documentation describes the Vela as an annual seven-day festival and records participation from devotees from Kerala and neighbouring southern states. The festival also has a strong connection with the agricultural landscape and local community traditions of Palakkad. The temple’s official festival tradition includes Kathir, a pre-Vela observance associated with paddy cultivation and the offering of newly harvested grain, reflecting the historical relationship between the Bhagavathy shrine and the agrarian life of Yakkara. Manappullikavu Vela therefore brings together temple worship, local traditions, percussion, ceremonial processions, performing arts and community participation in a distinctly Palakkad setting. Visitors should remember that the temple remains an active place of worship and follow the instructions of temple authorities during rituals and crowded festival events.
