## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Mampuram Nercha is an annual eight-day religious observance held at Mampuram Maqam in Mampuram, near Tirurangadi in Malappuram district, in memory of Mampuram Thangal, the revered spiritual leader Sayyid Alavi Thangal. The shrine stands on the northern bank of the Kadalundi River, locally known as Panampuzha, and is one of the important Muslim pilgrimage centres of the Malabar region. Mampuram Thangal, who came to Kerala from Thareem in Yemen, is remembered not only as a spiritual guide but also for his opposition to social inequalities and his role in the religious and social history of Malabar. The Mampuram Maqam, built over his grave, continues to attract devotees for regular prayers and the annual Uroos. Kerala Tourism describes the Mampuram Nercha as a predominantly religious observance, distinguishing it from the more festival-like nerchas held at some other Malabar shrines. The annual celebration traditionally takes place in the month of Muharram and includes a sequence of devotional and communal observances. The programme begins with Koottasiyarath, Dua and the ceremonial hoisting of the festival flag, followed by an inauguration programme and cultural activities. Religious speeches and special congregational prayers form an important part of the following days, while Swalath and Dhikr-Dua provide further opportunities for collective devotion and remembrance. Food distribution at the conclusion of the Uroos is another significant feature, reflecting the tradition of sharing and community participation associated with nercha observances. The shrine itself is an important part of the cultural landscape of Mampuram, where Islamic religious traditions, the history of the Mappila community and the memory of influential Thangals intersect. Kerala Tourism also records that the dargah attracts thousands of devotees for regular religious activities, including the Thursday Swalath Majlis, demonstrating that its importance extends beyond the annual festival. Mampuram has a wider historical significance as a centre associated with the Mappila resistance to British colonial rule, and the legacy of Mampuram Thangal is closely connected with this history. The Nercha therefore combines religious remembrance with the preservation of a significant chapter in the spiritual and social heritage of southern Malabar. Visitors attending the observance should treat the maqam and mosque complex as active places of worship, respect local religious customs and follow directions from the organisers, particularly during crowded prayer and food-distribution sessions.
