The Mamankam heritage site at Thirunavaya is one of Kerala's most historically significant landmarks, preserving the legacy of the legendary Mamankam festival that was held for centuries on the sacred banks of the Bharathapuzha River in present-day Malappuram district. Renowned as one of medieval Kerala's greatest political, cultural, and commercial gatherings, Mamankam was celebrated once every twelve years and attracted rulers, merchants, scholars, artists, pilgrims, and traders from across the Indian subcontinent and beyond. Initially conducted under the patronage of the Valluvanad rulers, the festival later came under the control of the Zamorins of Calicut after their conquest of the region, making it a symbol of political authority and regional power. One of the most remarkable chapters in Mamankam's history is the story of the Chaverukal (Chavers), the brave Valluvanad warriors who undertook self-sacrificial missions in an attempt to challenge the Zamorin and reclaim their kingdom, earning a lasting place in Kerala's historical and cultural memory for their courage and loyalty. Today, the memorials and heritage landmarks at Thirunavaya commemorate this extraordinary legacy, allowing visitors to explore the rich history of Mamankam and its influence on Kerala's political, social, and economic development. Located near the revered Navamukunda Temple and the Bharathapuzha River, the site offers a fascinating insight into the traditions, legends, and historical events that shaped the Malabar region, making it an important destination for history enthusiasts, cultural travellers, and students of Kerala's heritage.
