About this event

Malik Dinar Mosque, also known as Malik Deenar Juma Masjid or Malik Ibn Dinar Mosque, is a historic Islamic landmark at Thalangara in Kasaragod district, Kerala, and is regarded as one of the earliest mosques established in the Malabar region. According to traditional accounts, the mosque was founded in 642 CE by Malik Ibn Dinar, who is credited with the early propagation of Islam in Kerala. Kerala Tourism describes Malik Ibn Dinar and his companions as among the earliest Islamic missionaries to arrive on the Malabar Coast, linking the mosque with the long history of Kerala’s maritime connections with Arabia. The present structure is not the original building; the mosque began as a smaller structure and was later reconstructed, with Kerala Tourism recording a major reconstruction in 1809. Its architecture reflects the distinctive Kerala style, with a two-storeyed form, massive wooden beams and pillars, tiled roofing, and intricate Arabic carvings incorporated into the timber elements. The mosque’s wooden latticework also preserves details associated with its history and construction. A grave within the mosque complex is identified as that of Malik Ibn Muhammad, a descendant of Malik Ibn Dinar, while some historical traditions have associated the tomb with Malik Ibn Dinar himself. The site remains an important place of worship and a centre of Islamic heritage in northern Kerala, attracting devotees and visitors interested in the region’s religious and architectural history. Malik Dinar Mosque is also closely associated with the Malik Dinar Uroos, a major religious commemoration connected with the arrival of Malik Ibn Dinar and the early spread of Islam in Kerala. The observance brings together devotees for prayers and religious gatherings and has a strong community dimension. The mosque and its traditions form part of Kasaragod’s distinctive cultural landscape, where Arab, Kerala, and wider Malabar influences have shaped the region’s history. As a living place of worship rather than simply a historical monument, the mosque continues to preserve religious traditions while reflecting the enduring Islamic heritage of the Malabar Coast.
