## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Malappuram Shuhada Maqbara is a historic mausoleum associated with the Malappuram Shaheeds and located beside the Jama-at Mosque in Malappuram town, Kerala. The site forms part of an important Muslim pilgrimage centre in the district and is closely connected with the historical and religious traditions of the Malabar region. The Malappuram District Administration identifies the adjoining mausoleum as the resting place of the Malappuram Shaheeds, whose brave exploits have been preserved in Mappila ballads, the traditional Muslim ballad literature of northern Kerala. The maqbara therefore represents not only a place of remembrance but also a link between religious devotion, oral history and the cultural memory of the Mappila community. The Jama-at Mosque and the mausoleum together form a significant heritage complex on the Malappuram–Vengara Road. The mosque is recognised by Kerala Tourism as an important pilgrimage centre, while the associated Shaheed mausoleum contributes to the historical importance of the site. Visitors approaching the maqbara can encounter a living religious tradition in which remembrance of revered figures and martyrs remains intertwined with prayer and community life. The site is also associated with the annual Nercha of the Jama-at Mosque, a four-day religious observance traditionally held in April. The Nercha provides a major occasion for devotees to gather at the mosque and mausoleum, bringing together religious observances and longstanding community traditions. The historical narratives connected with the Shaheeds are part of the wider Mappila heritage of Malappuram, a region that witnessed important episodes in the history of Muslim communities and resistance movements in Malabar. These histories are preserved through oral traditions such as Mappila songs and ballads as well as through religious sites and memorials. The maqbara should consequently be understood within this broader historical context rather than solely as a monument to a single modern conflict. The surrounding mosque also has architectural significance, with its traditional Kerala-influenced design featuring white walls and blue doors. As an active Muslim religious site, the complex continues to serve devotees and pilgrims rather than functioning solely as a museum or archaeological monument. Visitors interested in the Islamic heritage of Malappuram can experience the site alongside other important religious and historical landmarks in the district. Those visiting during the annual Nercha will encounter a particularly active period of religious observance. Visitors should respect the sanctity of the mausoleum and mosque, follow local customs and comply with any instructions issued by religious authorities

🚌 Bus: Malappuram town is well connected by KSRTC and private buses with Manjeri, Kottakkal, Perinthalmanna, Tirur and other parts of the district. The Jama-at Mosque and adjoining mausoleum are located on the Malappuram–Vengara Road.

🏨 Stay: Hotels and other accommodation are available in Malappuram town, with additional options in Manjeri, Kottakkal and Perinthalmanna.

✅ Notes: The mausoleum is adjoining the Jama-at Mosque and is associated with the Malappuram Shaheeds whose stories are preserved in Mappila ballads. The Jama-at Mosque’s annual Nercha is a four-day observance traditionally held in April. The maqbara should not be described solely as a memorial to the 1921 Malabar Rebellion; visitors should follow mosque and mausoleum customs and confirm current Nercha dates locally.
