## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Malampuzha Rock Garden is a distinctive rock-cut garden in Malampuzha, Palakkad district, Kerala, created from discarded materials and recognised by Kerala Tourism as the first rock garden of its kind in South India and the second such garden in India. Situated close to the Malampuzha Dam and surrounded by the foothills of the Western Ghats, the garden combines sculpture, environmental reuse and Kerala's cultural imagery in an unusual outdoor art setting. Kerala Tourism states that the garden was conceived and designed by the renowned sculptor Nek Chand Saini, the creator of the famous Rock Garden of Chandigarh, and that the Malampuzha garden was opened to the public in 1996. It is maintained by the District Tourism Promotion Council, Palakkad. The defining feature of Malampuzha Rock Garden is its use of waste and discarded materials as artistic elements. Kerala Tourism identifies used plastic bottles, cans, broken tiles, bangle pieces, stones, power-related materials and other scrap among the materials transformed into sculptures and architectural forms. The approach gives otherwise discarded objects a different purpose and demonstrates how recycled material can be incorporated into large-scale public art. This makes the attraction relevant not only to Palakkad tourism and sightseeing but also to visitors interested in environmental art, recycling, sculpture and creative landscape design. The sculptures throughout the garden also reflect different aspects of Indian and Kerala culture. Kerala Tourism documents representations of Kathakali, Theyyam, Kalarippayattu and Thiruvathirakali, allowing the garden to function as an open-air visual interpretation of regional traditions alongside its recycled-material artwork. The combination of cultural sculpture and natural surroundings gives the destination a character different from a conventional botanical or recreational garden. Visitors can move through the landscaped pathways while observing figures, structures and decorative elements made from a variety of discarded materials, with the surrounding hills and Malampuzha reservoir providing a contrasting natural backdrop. Another important landmark within the wider Malampuzha garden complex is the large Yakshi sculpture created by the renowned Kerala sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman in 1969. Although the Yakshi predates the Rock Garden, Kerala Tourism identifies it as one of the major artistic highlights of the Malampuzha attraction and places it within the same garden landscape. The Rock Garden's location also allows visitors to combine art and nature sightseeing with the broader attractions of Malampuzha, including the dam, landscaped garden, aerial ropeway, rose garden, children's facilities and reservoir activities. Kerala Tourism places the Rock Garden approximately 800 metres from Malampuzha Dam and identifies it as one of the principal attractions of the destination. Current Palakkad District Tourism Promotion Council information lists the Rock Garden with an entry fee of ₹25 and operating hours of 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM, although visitors should verify current arrangements before travelling because tourism-facility schedules can change. The garden is particularly suitable for photography, family sightseeing, cultural exploration and visitors interested in unconventional forms of public art. Its appeal does not depend on rides or adventure activities; instead, the experience centres on discovering how broken ceramics, tiles, bottles, bangles, stones and other discarded objects have been transformed into sculptures and decorative forms. The surrounding Western Ghats landscape further enhances the setting, while the nearby Malampuzha reservoir creates a strong visual connection between engineered infrastructure, nature and artistic design. For travellers exploring Palakkad tourism, Malampuzha Rock Garden provides an especially distinctive combination of recycled art, Kerala culture, sculpture and scenic landscape. Its history, connection with Nek Chand Saini, use of discarded materials and location beside one of Palakkad's best-known attractions make it an important cultural and recreational stop in the Malampuzha area. Rather than being simply another garden, it represents a creative interpretation of waste materials and demonstrates how art can be integrated into an outdoor environment, offering visitors a memorable perspective on Kerala's approach to tourism, culture, environmental awareness and public art.
