## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Malabar Mahotsavam is an annual cultural festival organised by the Kozhikode District Tourism Promotion Council to showcase the artistic and cultural heritage of the Malabar region. Traditionally held in January, the festival brings together performers and audiences for programmes featuring classical dance, folk and ritual art forms, music and theatre. Kerala Tourism describes the festival as an initiative to revive and present Malabar’s rich cultural heritage while encouraging local artists and highlighting the region’s tourism potential. The festival has been associated with venues in central Kozhikode, including Mananchira and Kozhikode Beach, and its programmes have included classical dances, ritual art forms, musical performances and theatrical presentations. The cultural character of Malabar Mahotsavam reflects the diversity of North Kerala, where classical traditions exist alongside distinctive folk and ritual forms. Performances may include art forms such as Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Ottanthullal, Theyyam and Thira, depending on the programme for a particular edition. Music and percussion performances add another dimension to the festival, creating a platform for artists from different backgrounds and generations. Malabar Mahotsavam also connects the performing arts with Kozhikode’s wider cultural identity. The city has long been associated with Malabar’s maritime history, literary traditions, food culture and interaction with communities from different parts of the Indian Ocean world. The festival provides a contemporary public setting in which elements of this heritage can be presented to residents and visitors. Food is also an important part of the wider Malabar cultural experience, with Kozhikode renowned for its distinctive cuisine and traditional specialities. Earlier editions of Malabar Mahotsavam have also incorporated culinary celebrations alongside cultural programmes. For visitors interested in Kerala’s performing arts, the festival offers an opportunity to encounter several traditions within a single cultural programme rather than experiencing them only through individual temple or community celebrations. Its emphasis on local artistic expression, cultural presentation and public participation makes it an established part of Kozhikode’s annual cultural calendar. Festival schedules, venues and programme duration can vary from year to year, so the current edition should be checked through the Kozhikode District Tourism Promotion Council or Kerala Tourism before publication or tra
