## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Makara Sankranti celebrations at the Sasthamkotta Lake Shore are a spiritually significant observance that attracts devotees and visitors seeking to participate in traditional rituals associated with one of India’s most important harvest and solar festivals. Celebrated annually in January, Makara Sankranti marks the transition of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara) and symbolizes the beginning of an auspicious period in the Hindu calendar. At the serene shores of Sasthamkotta Lake, Kerala’s largest freshwater lake, devotees gather to perform sacred bathing rituals believed to purify the mind, body, and soul while invoking divine blessings for prosperity, health, and spiritual well-being. The tranquil surroundings of the lake provide an ideal setting for religious observances, prayer ceremonies, and community gatherings during the festival. Pilgrims often begin the day with a ritual bath in the sacred waters, followed by offerings, prayers, and visits to nearby temples dedicated to various deities. The celebration reflects Kerala’s deep-rooted spiritual traditions and highlights the cultural importance of water bodies in religious practices. Families and devotees participate in charitable activities, devotional programs, and traditional customs that emphasize gratitude for nature’s abundance and the successful completion of the harvest season. The event also serves as an occasion for social interaction and community bonding, bringing together people from different backgrounds in a shared expression of faith and devotion. Visitors can witness a blend of spirituality, tradition, and natural beauty as the lake shore becomes a focal point for religious activities and cultural observances. The scenic landscape of Sasthamkotta Lake enhances the atmosphere of peace and reflection, making the celebration particularly meaningful for those seeking spiritual enrichment. Through its sacred bathing rituals, prayers, and community participation, Makara Sankranti at Sasthamkotta Lake Shore continues to preserve centuries-old traditions while reinforcing the cultural and religious significance of one of Kerala’s most cherished freshwater ecosystems.
