## About this event

Madayi Fort is an ancient hilltop fortress located at Madayi, near Payangadi, in the Kannur district of northern Kerala. Considered one of the oldest historical forts in the North Malabar region, Madayi Fort sits atop the scenic Madayi Hill and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, lush greenery, and the distant Arabian Sea. The fort’s strategic hilltop location made it an important defensive structure and a key observation point for monitoring maritime activity along the Malabar Coast. Historians believe that the origins of the fort date back to the ancient Sangam period, making it a site of significant archaeological and cultural importance in Kerala’s history. Over time, the fort came under the control of the powerful Kolathiri dynasty, who ruled large parts of North Malabar and used the fort as a major military outpost and administrative center. During their reign, Madayi Fort played a crucial role in protecting coastal territories and regulating trade routes that connected Kerala to traders from Arabia, Southeast Asia, and other parts of the world. The Malabar Coast was historically famous for its spice trade, and the elevated position of Madayi Fort allowed rulers to oversee commercial activities and maintain security in the region. Throughout centuries, the area around the fort witnessed the presence and influence of Arab merchants and later interactions with European colonial powers such as Portugal, Netherlands, and United Kingdom, who were drawn to Kerala’s thriving maritime trade. Although the fort has partially fallen into ruins over time, its remains still reflect the architectural style and defensive planning used in ancient coastal fortifications. Today, Madayi Fort is a fascinating heritage site and tourist attraction in Kannur district, visited by history enthusiasts, photographers, and travelers seeking scenic viewpoints and cultural exploration. The hilltop location provides a peaceful environment for visitors to explore the remnants of the old fort while enjoying views of nearby landscapes, paddy fields, villages, and the Arabian Sea. As one of the historic landmarks of North Malabar, Madayi Fort stands as a reminder of Kerala’s rich past shaped by trade, cultural exchange, and regional power, making it an important destination for those interested in history, heritage, and nature in northern Kerala.
