About this event
Lokanarkavu Temple Festival is a major annual celebration at the historic Lokanarkavu Bhagavathi Temple in Memunda near Vadakara, Kozhikode district, a shrine dedicated to Goddess Durga and closely associated with the martial traditions and ballads of North Malabar. The temple is prominently linked in Kerala’s cultural tradition with Thacholi Othenan, the legendary warrior of the Vadakkan Pattukal, who is believed to have worshipped Lokanarkavilamma. Lokanarkavu has two principal annual festival periods: the 41-day Mandala Utsavam, or Mandalavilakku, held during Vrischikam from around mid-November to mid-December, and the Pooram festival held during Meenam in March–April. The Mandala Utsavam is particularly noted for Thacholikali, a distinctive folk performance associated exclusively with the temple and traditionally described as resembling movements of Kalarippayattu. The festival also features Chuttuvilakku, special prayers and poojas, while the temple walls are illuminated with more than 3,000 traditional oil lamps, creating one of the celebration’s characteristic evening scenes. The Pooram is a separate annual festival and is regarded as an important celebration at Lokanarkavu. It begins with the hoisting of the festival flag and continues through a programme of rituals and processions, culminating in the Pooram observance. Kerala Tourism’s festival documentation records caparisoned elephants, traditional percussion and the Nagarapradakshinam, or ceremonial procession around the town, among the features of the Pooram celebrations. Poorakkali, a traditional ritual folk art of North Malabar, is also performed during the temple festivals, while Thacholikkali belongs particularly to the Mandala Utsavam. The temple complex itself contains shrines dedicated to Goddess Durga, Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu and is noted for its traditional Kerala architecture, wooden sculptures and centuries-old mural paintings. The association with Kalarippayattu extends beyond the festival: Kerala Tourism notes that practitioners traditionally seek the deity’s blessings before beginning their martial-art careers. Lokanarkavu therefore represents an important intersection of temple worship, folklore, martial heritage and performing arts in northern Kerala. Its festivals preserve community traditions while providing a setting in which ritual, music, folk performance and the memory of North Malabar’s legendary warriors continue to be expressed. For visitors interested in Kerala’s cultural heritage, the festival offers an opportunity to encounter a living tradition shaped by both devotional practice and the region’s distinctive martial and folk culture.
