## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Lion-tailed Macaque Research is a wildlife-focused educational experience centred on Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary in Kollam district, a protected forest landscape in the southern Western Ghats and part of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve. Shendurney is known for its rich biodiversity and extensive tropical forest habitats, which support a variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and plant species. Among its notable mammals is the lion-tailed macaque (Macaca silenus), an endemic Western Ghats primate recognised for its glossy black coat, distinctive silver-white mane and tufted tail. The species is primarily arboreal and is closely associated with mature forest habitats, where it moves through the canopy in social groups while feeding on fruits, leaves, shoots, insects and other natural foods. Because lion-tailed macaques are shy and generally remain in dense forest areas, observing them in the wild requires patience and careful adherence to wildlife-protection guidelines. A research-oriented visit to Shendurney can introduce participants to the ecology, behaviour and conservation significance of this specialised primate while also providing a broader understanding of the forest ecosystem on which it depends. The sanctuary contains tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous vegetation, together with rivers, tributaries and forested landscapes that create varied habitats for wildlife. The area is also associated with important ecological and archaeological features, including the wider Kallada river system and prehistoric rock shelters containing evidence of early human occupation. Nature-based programmes in and around Shendurney include guided trekking, birdwatching, boating and other ecotourism activities conducted under designated arrangements. A research-themed experience should therefore focus on observation, interpretation and conservation awareness rather than treating wildlife encounters as guaranteed sightings. Visitors may learn how habitat protection, scientific observation and responsible tourism contribute to the long-term conservation of species such as the lion-tailed macaque. The Kerala Forest Department notes that this elusive primate faces pressures including habitat loss and historical hunting, making the protection of suitable forest habitats particularly important. Shendurney offers an appropriate setting for understanding these conservation issues within the living ecosystem where the species occurs. Participants should maintain a respectful distance from wildlife, avoid feeding or disturbing animals, remain within authorised areas and follow the instructions of forest officials or authorised guides. The experience ultimately connects wildlife research and environmental education with the conservation of one of the Western Ghats’ distinctive endemic primates, while encouraging a deeper appreciation of the ecological importance of Shendurney’s forests
