About this place

Lakkidi View Point, situated at the crest of the Thamarassery Ghat Pass, is one of the well-known scenic viewpoints in Wayanad and marks the gateway to the district. Located at an elevation of about 700 metres above sea level, Lakkidi overlooks the steep forested slopes, valleys and winding road of the Thamarassery Churam, which connects Kozhikode with Wayanad. The ghat section features nine hairpin bends between Adivaram and Lakkidi, and the viewpoint provides a clear vantage point over the surrounding cliffs and valleys. The landscape is characterised by dense greenery, streams, steep mountain slopes and the distinctive terrain of the Western Ghats. Lakkidi is also known for its high rainfall, with the area receiving exceptionally heavy precipitation during the southwest monsoon. Mist and cloud cover are common, particularly during rainy periods, often changing the appearance of the valleys and reducing visibility at the viewpoint. On clearer days, the elevated position offers broad views across the surrounding hills and the serpentine road below, making the location popular for landscape photography and short sightseeing stops. The natural setting around Lakkidi supports the rich vegetation associated with the Wayanad hills, while nearby attractions add to the area's appeal. The famous Chain Tree, associated with the local legend of Karinthandan and the construction of the Thamarassery route, is located in Lakkidi. Vythiri, a nearby hill settlement, lies about five kilometres from Lakkidi and provides access to several other attractions in the region. Lakkidi is primarily a roadside scenic destination rather than a trekking site, and visitors can enjoy the landscape without undertaking a demanding trail. The viewpoint's character changes significantly with the weather: monsoon conditions bring lush greenery, rain and mist, while periods of clearer weather generally provide better visibility of the surrounding terrain. As the viewpoint is beside a busy mountain road, visitors should remain in designated viewing areas and exercise particular caution around traffic, especially in fog, rain or low-visibility conditions. Together, the dramatic ghat road, forested mountains, misty valleys and elevated viewpoints make Lakkidi an important scenic stop in Wayanad.

🚆 Railway: Kozhikode Railway Station — approximately 57–58 km.

✈️ Airport: Calicut International Airport — approximately 66–69 km.
