About this place
The Kuthiyottam Nine-Day Vow at Chettikulangara Sree Bhagavathy Temple is one of Kerala's most distinctive and deeply rooted ritual observances, performed as a vazhipadu (devotional offering) to Goddess Bhagavathy (Bhadrakali) during the famous Chettikulangara Kumbha Bharani Festival at Chettikulangara Sree Bhagavathy Temple in Mavelikara, Alappuzha district, Kerala. Regarded as the temple's most significant ritual offering, Kuthiyottam is a symbolic ritual that has been preserved for generations as part of the temple's unique folklore and devotional traditions. The observance is undertaken by devotees who make a vow to the Goddess, traditionally dedicating boys between 8 and 14 years of age to participate in the ritual on behalf of their families. The preparation begins about one week before Bharani, following Maha Shivaratri, when the selected boys enter Kuthiyotta Kalaris under the guidance of experienced Kuthiyotta Asans (teachers). During this period, the participants follow a disciplined routine centred on prayer, ritual purity, devotional practices, and daily training in the traditional songs and choreographed movements associated with Kuthiyottam. The boys are regarded with great reverence throughout the observance, reflecting the symbolic nature of the offering rather than a theatrical performance. Each day, they learn the ritual dance sequences and devotional songs that praise Goddess Bhagavathy and recount episodes from local folklore and Hindu Puranas. The training culminates on Chettikulangara Kumbha Bharani, when the boys are ceremonially dressed and taken in a grand procession to the temple, accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles, ornamental umbrellas, and large numbers of devotees. After reaching the temple, they perform the ritual dance before the sanctum as an act of devotion to the Goddess, marking the fulfilment of the family's vow according to long-established temple customs. Kuthiyottam is performed alongside the spectacular Kettukazhcha procession, making Bharani one of Kerala's most celebrated temple festivals and an important expression of the cultural heritage of the Onattukara region. According to the official Chettikulangara Sree Bhagavathy Temple information and the official 2026 festival calendar, Chettikulangara Kumbha Bharani will be observed on 23 February 2026, while the Kuthiyottam preparations traditionally begin in the period following Maha Shivaratri, approximately one week before Bharani, under the supervision of recognised Kuthiyotta Kalaris. Visitors wishing to witness Kuthiyottam should note that participation is reserved for devotees undertaking the ritual vow, while the public may observe the ceremonial procession and concluding temple rituals during the Bharani festival. As festival schedules, timings, and related arrangements may be updated by the temple administration, visitors are advised to refer to the official Chettikulangara Sree Bhagavathy Temple website for the latest announcements before planning their visit.
