## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Kummattikkali is a traditional masked folk performance associated with Onam celebrations in several parts of Kerala, particularly in the central and northern regions of the state. The performance features dancers wearing painted masks representing deities, mythical figures, animals and other characters, along with costumes made from grass, leaves and other natural materials. Kummattikkali is traditionally presented as a lively procession, with performers moving through village streets and visiting homes while dancing and entertaining people. Its musical element is distinctive: the dancers are traditionally accompanied by the Onavillu, a bow-shaped string instrument played with a thin stick, rather than by a conventional orchestra of drums and other instruments. The songs associated with the performance commonly have devotional themes, while the colourful masks and playful movements give the art form a strong element of popular entertainment. A leading character known as Thalla Kummatti guides the performance, while other performers portray figures drawn from Hindu mythology and folk tradition. Kummattikkali costumes are particularly distinctive, with the body traditionally covered using braided Kummatti grass, while dried leaves may also be incorporated. The masks were historically made from natural materials and are now commonly crafted from light woods such as jackfruit wood. Kainakary, in Alappuzha district’s Kuttanad region, provides a scenic rural setting of paddy fields, canals, rivers and backwaters for cultural activities and seasonal celebrations. The village is closely connected with Kerala’s waterways and is known for its boat-racing tradition, with the Pamba River and surrounding water bodies forming an important part of its landscape and community life. When Kummattikkali is presented in Kainakary as part of an Onam or local cultural programme, the performance can be experienced within this distinctive backwater environment, linking a traditional folk art with the seasonal celebrations of the region. Kummattikkali is valued not only for its colourful visual character but also for its role in maintaining community-based folk traditions and encouraging interaction between performers and spectators. Children and adults alike can enjoy the masks, characters, music and informal presentation, while the participation of local performers helps keep the tradition connected with everyday community life. As a cultural experience, Kummattikkali offers a glimpse into Kerala’s diverse folk heritage and demonstrates how music, movement, storytelling, costume and communal participation come together in traditional festival performance.
