About this place

Kulathupuzha Sacred Fish Sanctuary is a general cultural and nature experience centred on the sacred pond beside the Kulathupuzha Sastha Temple in Kollam district. The temple, dedicated to Bala Sastha, or Lord Ayyappa in his youthful form, is situated beside the Kulathupuzha River in a forested part of eastern Kollam and is one of Kerala’s recognised Sastha shrines. The pond near the temple has a distinctive religious tradition associated with its fish, which devotees regard as dear to the deity. Feeding the fish is part of the local temple custom, while fishing in the pond is strictly prohibited, reflecting the community’s longstanding practice of protecting the fish. The temple’s official Sabarimala information specifically records the pond as an attraction and notes the practice of Meenoottu Vazhipadu, a ritual offering involving feeding the fish. The fish themselves are therefore an important part of the cultural character of the temple rather than simply a wildlife attraction. Kulathupuzha is set within a landscape of forests, hills and the Kulathupuzha River, a tributary of the Kallada River, giving the temple surroundings a strong connection with the natural environment. The river and nearby forest habitats support a variety of freshwater and terrestrial species, adding ecological interest to the area. While Garra mullya is a freshwater fish found in parts of Kerala and is associated with mountain streams, authoritative information about the Kulathupuzha temple pond does not establish that the protected temple fish are specifically this species. The experience is therefore better described generally as observing and learning about the sacred fish associated with the temple pond. Visitors can observe the fish from the permitted areas and appreciate the relationship between religious belief, local custom and the protection of aquatic life. The setting also provides an opportunity to experience the architectural and spiritual character of Kulathupuzha Sastha Temple, whose traditions are closely connected with the river and surrounding forests. As a place of worship, the temple environment should be approached respectfully, with visitors following temple regulations and avoiding actions that disturb devotees, fish or the surrounding ecosystem. Fishing, capturing or otherwise harming the pond’s fish is prohibited. The Kulathupuzha Sacred Fish Sanctuary can thus be presented as a cultural and nature-oriented experience rather than a conventional wildlife sanctuary: its significance lies in the living tradition of protecting and feeding the temple fish and in the close relationship between the sacred pond, the temple and the forested river landscape of Kulathupuzha.
