## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Kulathupuzha Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is an important Ayyappa shrine in eastern Kollam, situated on the banks of the Kulathupuzha River, a tributary of the Kallada River. The presiding deity is Lord Ayyappa worshipped as Bala Sastha, or Sastha in child form, giving the temple a distinctive place among Kerala’s Sastha shrines. The official Sabarimala website identifies Kulathupuzha as one of the 108 Sastha shrines in Kerala and records that the deity is traditionally believed to have been installed by Lord Parasurama. The temple is also associated with several subsidiary deities, including Shiva, Yakshi, Vishnu, Ganapathi, Boothathan, Nagar and Karuppaswami. The temple’s setting contributes strongly to its character. Kulathupuzha lies within the forested eastern region of Kollam, along the Thiruvananthapuram–Shenkottai road, while the river flowing beside the temple provides an important natural feature of the pilgrimage landscape. A distinctive offering associated with the shrine is Meenoottu, in which devotees feed the fish in the temple pond. The fish are traditionally regarded as sacred and fishing is strictly prohibited in the pond. The temple’s most important documented festival is Vishu Mahotsavam, celebrated during April or May. The official Sabarimala temple profile also records the annual Thiruvutsavam during the Malayalam month of Medam, from the fifth to the fourteenth day. Kerala Tourism similarly identifies Vishu Mahotsavam as the major festival associated with Kulathupuzha Temple. Devotional worship and temple rituals continue throughout the year, while the festival season brings increased pilgrimage and ceremonial activity. The temple forms part of the wider network of Ayyappa shrines associated with the Sabarimala pilgrimage tradition, and its representation of Bala Sastha gives it a particular religious identity within that network. Although devotional singing and chanting may naturally form part of individual or group worship at an Ayyappa temple, a separately established annual event titled “Kulathupuzha Bala Sastha Kirtan” with the specific evening programme described is not documented in the official temple and Kerala Tourism sources reviewed. For publication, the established attraction is therefore best presented as Kulathupuzha Sree Dharma Sastha Temple and its documented festivals, particularly Vishu Mahotsavam. Visitors can experience the temple’s devotional atmosphere, river setting, traditional worship and distinctive Meenoottu offering while respecting the rules governing the sacred pond and temple premises.
