About this place

Krishnapuram Palace at Kayamkulam in Alappuzha district is a protected heritage monument and museum associated with the former rulers of Kayamkulam. The palace was built during the reign of Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma of Travancore after the annexation of Kayamkulam, and its present structure reflects the traditional architectural vocabulary of Kerala. Rather than being described simply as an untouched eighteenth-century palace, it is a historic structure that underwent significant reconstruction in the eighteenth century and was subsequently preserved as an archaeological monument. Its distinctive architectural features include gabled roofs, narrow corridors, dormer windows, thick-framed doors, courtyards and finely crafted wooden elements, creating an intimate example of Kerala’s traditional palace architecture. The palace is particularly renowned for the Gajendra Moksham mural, a monumental 49-square-metre painting depicting the elephant Gajendra paying homage to Lord Vishnu, surrounded by divine and sage figures. The work is regarded by Kerala Tourism as the largest mural painting discovered in Kerala and is one of the principal highlights of the palace museum. Kerala’s traditional mural-painting practice is characterised by strong outlines, stylised figures and pigments traditionally derived from natural mineral and plant sources, and the Gajendra Moksham provides an important example of this artistic heritage. The palace museum also houses a varied collection of archaeological and historical objects, including sculptures, paintings, bronze objects, coins, weapons, megalithic remains, stone inscriptions and other antiques. Among the notable objects associated with the collection is the Kayamkulam sword, a distinctive double-edged weapon connected with the region’s martial history. These displays broaden the visit beyond the palace’s architecture and mural, offering glimpses into the material culture and political history of Kerala. The building and its collections are maintained under the Kerala Department of Archaeology as a protected monument, with conservation work undertaken to preserve its architectural and artistic features. The palace complex includes landscaped surroundings and a large pond, adding to the character of the historic setting. Located near the Sree Krishnaswamy Temple at Krishnapuram, the palace forms part of Kayamkulam’s wider heritage landscape. Today, it provides visitors with an opportunity to experience traditional Kerala architecture while viewing one of the state’s most important mural paintings and a collection spanning archaeology, art and regional history. Its combination of historic architecture, the Gajendra Moksham mural and archaeological collections makes Krishnapuram Palace a significant destination for understanding Kerala’s artistic and royal heritage.
