About this place

Kovalam is one of Kerala’s best-known coastal destinations for parasailing, with the activity officially promoted at Hawa Beach and the wider Kovalam coastal zone. Located in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kovalam is characterised by three adjacent crescent-shaped beaches—Hawa Beach, Grove’s Beach (Samudra Beach) and Lighthouse Beach—framed by palm-covered slopes, rocky headlands and the Arabian Sea. Parasailing offers visitors an elevated view of this distinctive coastline, with the sea, beaches and the iconic 36-metre Vizhinjam Lighthouse forming part of the panorama. Kerala Tourism identifies Kovalam as the location of Kerala’s first official parasailing project, launched at Hawa Beach using a winch boat and certified equipment. The activity is designed as a supervised coastal adventure, with the participant attached to a parasail while a boat provides the towing power. The actual flight lasts only a few minutes, while the complete experience, including briefing and boat time, generally takes about 20–30 minutes. Kerala Tourism rates the activity as easy to moderate and notes that it can be suitable for first-time participants, particularly when using tandem arrangements. Safety depends on following the operator’s briefing and using the prescribed harness and life jacket, while flights remain subject to sea and wind conditions. Kovalam’s broader landscape adds considerably to the experience. From above, visitors can appreciate the relationship between the three beaches, the rocky promontories and the open Arabian Sea, while the shoreline below remains a lively setting for swimming, surfing, catamaran rides, beach walks and other recreational activities. Lighthouse Beach, in particular, combines its sandy shoreline with the prominent red-and-white lighthouse and a busy beachfront lined with restaurants and shops. Parasailing is seasonal, with Kerala Tourism identifying October to March as the preferred period and advising visitors to postpone or reschedule flights during rough seas or strong winds. The activity is therefore best planned around favourable coastal conditions rather than treated as an all-weather attraction. Visitors should choose an accredited adventure-activity provider and confirm current operating arrangements before booking. With its established watersports infrastructure and distinctive coastal setting, parasailing at Kovalam provides a concise aerial adventure while offering a different perspective on one of southern Kerala’s most recognisable beach landscapes.
