About this place

Kottayam Valiyapally (St. Mary’s Knanaya Valiyapally) is one of Kerala’s oldest and most historically significant Syrian Christian churches, standing as a remarkable testament to the region’s ancient Christian heritage. Located at Thazhathangady in Kottayam, the church was originally established in 1550, making it older than the nearby Kottayam Cheriapally, which was built in 1579. The term “Valiyapally,” meaning “Great Church,” refers to its status as the older church in the locality rather than its size. Renowned for its rich spiritual legacy, the church has long been an important center for the Knanaya Christian community and continues to attract pilgrims, historians, architecture enthusiasts, and tourists interested in Kerala’s centuries-old Christian traditions. The church showcases an exceptional blend of traditional Kerala and Portuguese architectural styles, featuring a sloping tiled roof, intricately carved wooden ceilings, granite pillars, lime-plastered walls, and elegant façades that reflect the fusion of indigenous craftsmanship with European influences introduced during the Portuguese era. Among its most treasured possessions are two ancient Persian (Pahlavi) granite crosses, dating to around the 8th century, which are considered some of the oldest surviving Christian artifacts in Kerala and symbolize the historic connections between the Saint Thomas Christians of Kerala and the Persian Church. These rare crosses, along with beautiful mural paintings, antique carvings, and inscriptions in ancient scripts, make the church an invaluable repository of religious art and cultural heritage. Over the centuries, Kottayam Valiyapally has played a vital role in preserving the liturgical traditions, customs, and identity of the Knanaya community while hosting important religious celebrations and annual feasts attended by devotees from across Kerala and beyond. Today, it remains one of the most important Christian pilgrimage destinations in Kerala and a prominent heritage landmark, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience centuries of faith, history, architecture, and artistic excellence. Its sacred atmosphere, historical significance, remarkable Persian crosses, and architectural beauty continue to make Kottayam Valiyapally a must-visit destination for those exploring Kerala’s religious tourism and cultural legacy.
