## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Kutiyattam, the classical Sanskrit theatre tradition of Kerala, is one of India’s oldest living theatrical traditions and was inscribed in 2008 on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The tradition combines Sanskrit classical theatre with local performance practices of Kerala and is distinguished by highly codified acting techniques, especially netra abhinaya, or expressive use of the eyes, and hasta abhinaya, the language of hand gestures. Traditionally performed in koothambalams, the theatre spaces associated with Kerala temples, Kutiyattam places exceptional emphasis on facial expression, gesture, controlled movement and detailed interpretation of character and emotion. In Thiruvananthapuram, Margi has played an important role in teaching and presenting Kutiyattam, along with related forms such as Nangiarkoothu and Chakyar Koothu. Kerala Tourism identifies Margi as one of the leading institutions involved in Kutiyattam training and performance in the capital, with its Valiyasala centre dedicated to Kutiyattam and related temple arts. Performances presented by Margi provide audiences with an opportunity to encounter this demanding theatrical tradition outside the restricted ritual context of some temple koothambalams while retaining many of its characteristic artistic features. A Kutiyattam presentation may draw from Sanskrit dramatic literature and traditional performance texts, with the actor elaborating a selected episode through carefully controlled expression and gesture. The mizhavu, the large copper percussion instrument traditionally associated with Kutiyattam, provides an essential rhythmic accompaniment, while an oil lamp placed on the performance space reflects the ritual heritage of the form. Kutiyattam performances can be highly extended, with a single act traditionally taking several days to elaborate, although contemporary public presentations are often adapted to available performance schedules. The art requires rigorous training, and UNESCO notes that performers traditionally undergo many years of preparation to master its sophisticated techniques. Margi’s continuing work in training and performance contributes to the transmission of this heritage to new generations and to wider audiences in Thiruvananthapuram. The city’s Kutiyattam programmes also form part of a broader network of institutions and artists supported by the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Kutiyattam Kendra, which organises performances, workshops and lecture-demonstrations. Rather than treating Kutiyattam simply as a theatrical spectacle, visitors can approach these performances as encounters with a living artistic tradition in which Sanskrit literature, Kerala performance practice, music, gesture and disciplined acting remain closely connected.
