## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Koodiyattam is one of Kerala’s oldest surviving theatrical traditions, combining Sanskrit dramatic literature with highly codified acting techniques and regional performance practices. Inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008, Kutiyattam is traditionally associated with temple theatres known as Koothambalams. The form is distinguished by detailed facial expression, especially netra abhinaya or expressive eye movements, elaborate hand gestures, stylised movement, distinctive costumes and makeup, and carefully developed character interpretation. Performances draw on Sanskrit plays and traditional performance texts, with the actor’s expressive interpretation occupying a central place in the presentation. The mizhavu, a large copper percussion instrument traditionally played by members of the Nambiar community, provides an important rhythmic foundation, while other performers and instruments contribute to the theatrical presentation. Traditionally, Kutiyattam performances could extend over several days because of the detailed treatment given to individual scenes and characters. Koothambalams were purpose-built performance spaces within temple complexes, with the acting area traditionally illuminated by an oil lamp, creating an intimate relationship between the performer, sacred space and audience. UNESCO describes Kutiyattam as a synthesis of Sanskrit classicism and Kerala’s local traditions, with a history extending back more than two millennia. The art form has historically been associated with Chakyar and Nambiar communities and has developed through rigorous, specialised training; today it is also taught through institutions such as Kerala Kalamandalam and other cultural centres, allowing the tradition to reach wider audiences. While Kutiyattam continues to be presented in temple Koothambalams, performances are also organised in cultural institutions and public venues. A specific recital described as being held at an “Aryankavu Koothambalam” should therefore be associated with an actual scheduled performance rather than presented as a permanent or regularly occurring attraction without confirmation. For audiences able to attend a genuine Kutiyattam recital in a traditional setting, the experience offers an opportunity to encounter an intricate theatrical language built around expression, gesture, rhythm and dramatic interpretation. The performance is valued not simply as entertainment but as a living classical tradition whose transmission depends on specialised training, practitioners, institutions and communities. Its combination of Sanskrit theatre, Kerala performance aesthetics, percussion and ritual heritage makes Kutiyattam an important part of the state’s performing-arts legacy and one of India’s internationally recognised forms of intangible cultural heritage.
