About this place

The Kondotty Pazhayangadi Mosque, popularly known as Kondotty Mosque or Kondotty Qubba, is a historic Muslim pilgrimage centre in Kondotty, Malappuram district, associated with the revered Sufi saint Muhammad Shah, popularly known as Kondotty Thangal. Kerala Tourism describes the mosque as a 500-year-old religious and cultural landmark, while other official Kerala sources associate the present structure with the region's historic Islamic traditions and identify the tomb of Muhammad Shah near the mosque. The shrine is particularly noted for its distinctive architecture, combining Mughal influences with local craftsmanship. Its large white dome, intricate detailing, latticed elements and stone corridors give the complex a character that distinguishes it from many traditional Kerala mosques. The mosque's principal annual celebration is the Kondotty Nercha, also called Valiya Nercha, a religious and cultural festival traditionally held in February or March. Official sources differ on its duration, describing it variously as a three-day or week-long observance, while the Malappuram district administration identifies it as a week-long festival. The celebrations include religious observances, processions, cultural programmes and community activities, with music recitals forming part of the festival atmosphere. A notable feature of the Nercha is its inter-religious character, with the Malappuram district administration highlighting the traditional ‘Petty Varavu’ as an expression of shared participation. The festival attracts large numbers of devotees and visitors and is accompanied by temporary commercial activity and public festivities around the mosque. Beyond the annual Nercha, the Pazhayangadi Mosque remains a place of pilgrimage throughout the year, drawing visitors interested in the spiritual heritage of Kondotty and the Mappila Muslim traditions of Malabar. Its association with Kondotty Thangal, distinctive Mughal-inspired architecture and long-standing religious importance make it one of the notable Islamic heritage sites of northern Kerala. The surrounding Kondotty landscape, with its town setting and green hills, further contributes to the visual character of the historic shrine. The mosque and its annual Nercha continue to represent an important intersection of faith, local history, architecture and community traditions in Malappuram.
