About this event

Kollam Carnival East is a New Year street carnival in Punalur, the inland taluk town of Kollam on the road and rail line toward the ghats. The name can send you to Kollam beach. The carnival is in Punalur, not on the coast. If you go to the sand in Kollam city, you are in the wrong place.

A street carnival means stalls and a public evening in town. People are out on the street rather than inside a ticketed hall. What the stalls sell, whether food is served, and which street is used are part of the plan when someone publishes it. No stage list is fixed here. There may be music, and there may not. There may be food, and there may not. A carnival evening is crowded, slow, and local. It is not a seated concert with a printed programme.

Punalur railway station is in town, under a kilometre from the centre. The Kallada suspension bridge, finished in 1877, is how you recognise the town. They are not automatically the carnival route. The town hall, used for concerts on other nights, is not this ground either. A sabha recital and a film-song night belong in halls and at the stadium. This carnival is the street. Do not wait in the town hall because the word Kollam is in the title.

New Year is the season. That means the change of the civil year, without a locked choice between 31 December, 1 January, or a wider week. Someone has to say which evening. This is not the Kollam city crafts fair, which is stalls and talks in the city from December into January. It is not a beach carnival. East, in the name, points you inland to Punalur.

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is about 83 kilometres from Punalur. Buses use the Punalur bus stand. Rooms named for the town are A One Hotel, Hotel Panacea Ventures, and Shaji Hotel. The carnival is not a hotel lawn.

Punalur at New Year is the place. Kollam beach is a different town and a different kind of evening. If you come by train, the station is already in Punalur, under a kilometre from the centre, and you then need the street the stalls are on. Nobody has named that street here. The 1877 bridge and the town hall are easy to aim at, and both can be wrong. New Year might mean the evening of 31 December, the day of 1 January, or a wider week. Ask which. Food may or may not be sold. A stage may or may not be built. A One Hotel, Hotel Panacea Ventures, and Shaji Hotel are rooms if the town is full. They are not the carnival. An ordinary street with ordinary traffic is a street, not a fair.

The crafts fair in Kollam city, from December into January, is stalls and talks. This carnival is a street evening in Punalur around the change of the civil year. The shared word Kollam is what sends people to the wrong coast. If the streets have not been named, and no stall is trading, you are early or you are in the wrong week.

Ask in Punalur which streets are used, which evening around New Year is meant, and whether the stalls are trading. If the streets are ordinary traffic and nobody has put a stall out, the carnival is not on that night. A month is not a nightly fair.
