DESCRIPTION:Kolkali is a traditional stick-dance folk art of Kerala in whic
h performers move in coordinated formations while striking small wooden st
icks in rhythm with their steps and accompanying songs. Although Kolkali i
s especially associated with the North Malabar region\, the Mappila or Mus
lim form of the art is part of Kerala’s wider Muslim cultural heritage a
nd can be presented at community gatherings and cultural programmes in oth
er parts of the state. The performance traditionally involves a group of m
en forming a circle and moving through carefully coordinated patterns as t
hey strike their sticks together. The circle may expand and contract as th
e tempo increases\, requiring close attention to rhythm\, spacing and the
movements of the other performers. Kerala Tourism describes Mappila Kolkal
i as beginning with prayers to Allah\, Prophet Muhammad and Sufi saints\,
followed by traditional Mappila songs sung at varying pitches as the perfo
rmers change their formations and movements. The art also incorporates ele
ments associated with Kerala’s martial tradition\, particularly Kalaripa
yattu\, which can be seen in aspects of its footwork\, body positions and
choreography. Performers traditionally wear simple Mappila attire\, includ
ing mundu and an upper garment\, while the precise costume and presentatio
n can vary according to the group and occasion. Kolkali is taught through
practice under experienced performers or asans\, helping preserve the coor
dinated movements and musical traditions from…\n\nEvent page: https://ap
