DESCRIPTION:Kodungallur Bharani is the annual festival of the Sree Kurumba
Bhagavathy Temple at Kodungallur in Thrissur district\, one of Kerala’s
major centres of Bhadrakali worship. Celebrated according to the Malayalam
calendar during Meenam\, generally in March or April\, the festival is di
stinctive for its intense ritual traditions and the large participation of
velichappad\, or oracles\, who enter a state of religious trance as part
of the ceremonies. The festival period extends over several weeks\, tradit
ionally beginning with Bharani in Kumbham and continuing until seven days
after Bharani in Meenam. Among its important observances is Aswathy Kavuth
eendal\, conducted on the day before the Bharani star. During Kavutheendal
\, large numbers of oracles\, traditionally dressed in red\, enter the tem
ple precincts carrying swords and perform ritual movements in a highly cha
rged atmosphere. Devotees participate through established offerings and cu
stoms associated with the temple\, while traditional cries\, ritual action
s and the movement of the oracles create the characteristic atmosphere of
the celebration. Kerala Tourism identifies Kavutheendal as the principal e
vent of the Bharani festival and records the congregation of a large numbe
r of oracles as one of its defining features. The festival is dedicated to
Bhadrakali\, whom temple tradition associates with the destruction of the
demon Darika. The wooden image of the goddess at the temple is traditiona
lly depicted with eight hands\, including one…\n\nEvent page: https://ap
