## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The Kochi-Muziris Biennale is a major international contemporary art exhibition that transforms Kochi’s historic neighbourhoods and heritage spaces into venues for art, dialogue and cultural exchange. Founded in 2011 by artists Bose Krishnamachari and Riyas Komu, the Biennale was established as an artist-led initiative to create a significant platform for contemporary art in India and to connect Kerala with international artistic practices. Held once every two years, each edition is shaped by a different artistic theme and curatorial approach, bringing together artists from India and around the world. Exhibitions can encompass painting, sculpture, large-scale installations, photography, video, sound, performance and other contemporary practices, with works often created specifically in response to the architectural, historical and social character of their surroundings. Rather than being confined to a conventional museum complex, the Biennale occupies a network of venues across Kochi, particularly in Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and surrounding areas. Historic warehouses, former industrial buildings, heritage properties and other distinctive spaces become temporary galleries, creating an experience in which contemporary art interacts directly with the city’s layered history. The Biennale’s connection with Muziris refers to the ancient port and trading region of Kerala, remembered as a centre of maritime commerce and cultural exchange, and forms part of the event’s broader engagement with Kerala’s historical connections to the wider world. Beyond the main exhibition, the Biennale Foundation conducts public programmes that can include talks, workshops, performances, film screenings, educational initiatives and projects involving local communities. These programmes broaden access to contemporary art and encourage conversations among artists, students, researchers, residents and visitors. The exhibition has also contributed to Kochi’s emergence as an important destination for contemporary art and cultural tourism, while encouraging audiences to explore the city’s historic districts and independent creative spaces. Each edition introduces its own participating artists, venues, programme and ticketing arrangements, so the scale and details vary from one Biennale to the next. For travellers searching for Kochi-Muziris Biennale, contemporary art exhibitions in Kerala, Kochi art events or international art festivals in India, the Biennale offers an opportunity to encounter contemporary artistic practices within one of India’s most historically layered urban environments. Its combination of global art, local history, adaptive heritage spaces and public engagement has made it an important fixture on India’s contemporary cultural calendar
