## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The Kerala Lalithakala Akademi’s annual state-level visual arts exhibitions form an important part of the state’s contemporary art calendar, providing a platform for painters, sculptors, photographers and other visual artists to present their work to the public. Established in 1962, the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi is an autonomous cultural organisation of the Government of Kerala with a mandate to conserve and promote visual arts, while supporting exhibitions, camps, workshops, seminars and other artistic activities. Its exhibitions have included state-level painting and sculpture shows as well as photography and cartoon exhibitions, bringing together established practitioners and emerging artists from different parts of Kerala. In Thiruvananthapuram, Akademi exhibitions have been held at the Chithrashala Art Gallery at Vyloppilli Samskrithi Bhavan in Nalanda, rather than at the Museum Art Gallery. Vyloppilli Samskrithi Bhavan is a Government of Kerala cultural institution dedicated to research, documentation, presentation and preservation of Kerala’s artistic and cultural traditions, and its complex includes an art gallery and other cultural spaces. The exhibitions provide audiences with an opportunity to encounter varied approaches to contemporary visual expression, including painting, sculpture and photography, while reflecting changing artistic responses to society, culture, nature and everyday life. Depending on the particular exhibition, works may be selected through an institutional or state-level exhibition process, and awards or recognitions may form part of the Akademi’s wider programme for supporting artistic achievement. The organisation also conducts art camps, workshops and seminars, creating opportunities for interaction between artists, students, researchers and the wider public. For visitors, an Akademi exhibition offers a closer look at Kerala’s evolving visual-art landscape and the range of creative practices being pursued across the state. The setting at Vyloppilli Samskrithi Bhavan adds a broader cultural dimension, as the institution itself functions as a centre for artistic and cultural activities and preserves the legacy of Malayalam poet Vyloppilli Sreedhara Menon. Exhibition dates, participating artists, categories of work and accompanying programmes vary from year to year, so the relevant annual announcement should be checked before visiting. Rather than being defined by a fixed April schedule or a single format, the Akademi’s exhibition programme reflects its continuing role in presenting, encouraging and documenting Kerala’s visual arts. Through exhibitions and related artistic initiatives, the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi contributes to the visibility of contemporary art while maintaining an institutional connection with the state’s wider cultural heritage.
