## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Kerala Kalamandalam in Cheruthuruthy, Thrissur district, is one of Kerala’s foremost institutions for the preservation, teaching, and presentation of traditional performing arts. Founded in 1930 by poet Vallathol Narayana Menon with the support of Manakkulam Mukunda Raja, the institution played a major role in revitalising Kerala’s classical arts and continues to follow a traditional gurukula-based approach to training. Located on the banks of the Bharathapuzha, Kerala Kalamandalam is particularly associated with Kathakali, while its artistic disciplines also include Mohiniyattam, Kutiyattam, Nangiarkoothu, Thullal, vocal music, and traditional percussion. Its iconic Koothambalam, designed in the traditional style of Kerala temple theatres, provides a distinctive setting for performances and cultural presentations. The institution regularly hosts performances, recitals, lecture-demonstrations, workshops, and other programmes involving both experienced artists and students, allowing audiences to encounter Kerala’s performing traditions in an authentic institutional setting. Among its notable recurring cultural events is the Nila Dance and Music Festival, generally held in March in connection with the anniversary celebrations of Kerala Kalamandalam. The festival brings together classical dance, music, theatre, and other performing arts and also provides an occasion to honour artists and scholars who have contributed to Kerala’s cultural life. Kerala Kalamandalam has also hosted specialised festivals, including the International Festival of Kutiyattam, reflecting its continuing role in promoting traditional theatre and related scholarship. Kutiyattam, recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is among the important traditions nurtured and presented at the institution. Visitors can also explore the campus and learn about its history, training practices, architecture, and artistic traditions through programmes offered by the institution. The combination of rigorous artistic training, live performances, historic architecture, and the cultural landscape of Cheruthuruthy makes Kerala Kalamandalam an important destination for those interested in Kerala’s classical performing arts. Rather than being a single annual festival, the institution’s cultural calendar includes recurring festivals and regular artistic programmes, with dates and programmes varying from year to year
