## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Located at Thevara in Kochi, the Kerala Folklore Museum is a private cultural institution devoted to preserving and presenting Kerala’s traditional arts, architecture and material heritage. Opened in 2009, the museum occupies a distinctive three-storey building that incorporates architectural traditions associated with Malabar, Cochin and Travancore. The structure itself forms an important part of the visit, combining carved wooden elements, traditional doorways, ceilings, laterite stone and other architectural components collected from older structures. Inside, the museum presents a broad collection of objects representing Kerala and wider South Indian cultural traditions. The museum’s official website describes around 4,000 artefacts on display, including stone, wood and bronze sculptures, ancient terracotta objects, Stone Age artefacts, jewellery, paintings, oil lamps, musical instruments, tribal and folk art, wooden works, utensils, masks and other traditional objects. Costumes and objects associated with Kerala’s classical, folk and ritual performance traditions provide further insight into the state’s diverse artistic culture. Displays associated with Theyyam, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Ottanthullal and other traditional forms illustrate the importance of costume, ornamentation and visual design in Kerala’s performing arts. Traditional musical instruments form another significant part of the collection, demonstrating the close relationship between music, ritual and performance. The museum also functions as a cultural venue through its Folklore Theatre, where traditional art performances and cultural programmes are presented; the availability and schedule of individual performances can vary. Its architectural arrangement and collections together provide an opportunity to explore aspects of everyday life, craftsmanship, ritual practice and artistic expression from earlier periods. The museum was established as a non-profit cultural initiative with an emphasis on art education and on providing visual and academic resources for students, researchers, artists and visitors. Its location in Thevara places it within Kochi’s wider cultural landscape, while the museum itself offers a concentrated introduction to Kerala’s traditional material culture. Visitors interested in architecture can examine the building’s regional styles and intricate craftsmanship, while those interested in folklore and performing arts can explore the associated costumes, masks, instruments and ritual objects. The Kerala Folklore Museum therefore combines architecture, collections and cultural performance in a single setting, making it a useful destination for understanding the diversity of Kerala’s traditional artistic heritage and the craftsmanship through which that heritage has been preserved.
