## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The Karumady Buddha Commemoration is an annual Buddha Purnima observance held at Karumadikkuttan in Karumady, near Ambalappuzha, Alappuzha district, Kerala, centred on the historic black-granite Buddha image preserved at the site. Karumadikkuttan is recognised by the Government of Kerala as an important Buddhist heritage site, and the Buddha image is under the protection of the Kerala Archaeology Department. Kerala Tourism identifies Karumadikkuttan as an important Buddhist pilgrimage and heritage site and specifically records that Buddha Purnima is celebrated there every year by the Kerala Buddhist Council, attracting devotees from Kerala and other parts of India. The commemoration provides an opportunity for Buddhist communities and visitors to gather at this historic site and reflect on the teachings and legacy of Gautama Buddha. Reported programmes of recent Buddha Purnima celebrations at Karumadi have included prayer, meditation, Dhamma talks, floral offerings, charitable activities and communal gatherings, although the exact programme can vary from year to year. The event also has an important heritage dimension because Karumadikkuttan represents one of Kerala's surviving material links with the Buddhist tradition that flourished in the region during the early medieval period. The statue is generally dated to between the 9th and 14th centuries, with the Government of Kerala's Alappuzha district administration describing it specifically as an 11th-century solid black-granite Buddha image. The three-foot statue is preserved beneath a protective structure and remains an important landmark within Karumady's cultural landscape. The annual Buddha Purnima gathering therefore combines religious remembrance with awareness of Kerala's Buddhist heritage, allowing participants to engage with both the spiritual significance of Vesak and the historical importance of the monument. For the upcoming 2027 edition, the event will be associated with Buddha Purnima/Vesak, but the specific Karumadikkuttan programme date and schedule have not yet been officially announced. The date of Buddha Purnima is determined according to the Buddhist lunar calendar, so the final event date should be updated once the organisers publish the 2027 programme. The commemoration is particularly significant because the Kerala Buddhist Council has been organising Buddha Purnima celebrations at Karumadi since 2014, helping maintain public attention on the site's Buddhist heritage. 2027 status: Upcoming; exact Karumadikkuttan Buddha Purnima programme and date to be announced.
