About this place
Karimpuzha Wildlife Sanctuary is a pristine protected forest area located near Nilambur in the Malappuram district of Kerala, forming an important part of the ecologically rich Western Ghats mountain range, which is recognized as one of the world’s most significant biodiversity hotspots. Surrounded by dense evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, the sanctuary represents a vital habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna and plays an essential role in maintaining the ecological balance of the region. The area that now forms the Karimpuzha Wildlife Sanctuary was historically part of the Nilambur forest region, a vast stretch of natural forest that was once managed by the Nilambur Kovilakam, the royal family that ruled the region in earlier centuries. These forests were known for their valuable timber resources and rich biodiversity, and they later came under the management of the Kerala Forest Department as conservation awareness and forest protection policies developed over time. Recognizing the immense ecological value of this forest landscape and the need to protect its diverse wildlife habitats, the Government of Kerala officially declared the Karimpuzha region as a wildlife sanctuary in 2020. The sanctuary is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife species including elephants, leopards, gaur, sambar deer, wild boars, and numerous smaller mammals that inhabit the thick forest environment. In addition to mammals, the sanctuary also supports a rich diversity of bird species, reptiles, amphibians, and insects, making it an important location for wildlife observation and ecological research. The dense vegetation and forest cover provide a safe refuge for many endangered and endemic species that are characteristic of the Western Ghats ecosystem. Karimpuzha Wildlife Sanctuary also plays a critical role in watershed protection and climate regulation, as the forests contribute to maintaining water sources, supporting nearby river systems, and preserving soil stability in the region. The sanctuary’s remote and relatively undisturbed environment makes it an important conservation zone where natural ecosystems continue to thrive with minimal human interference. Today, Karimpuzha Wildlife Sanctuary stands as a symbol of Kerala’s commitment to wildlife conservation and environmental protection, preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Western Ghats while offering opportunities for scientific research, ecological education, and sustainable nature tourism in the Nilambur forest region.
