About this place
Kanadi Kavu Sree Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy Temple stands at Kizhakkummuri, Peringottukara, on the Kanjany–Peringottukara Road in Thrissur district, Kerala 680571. The map pin for this listing is the shrine known locally as Kanadikavu, about 20 km southwest of Thrissur town. The principal deity is Sree Vishnumaya Kuttichathan, worshipped here together with 390 Kuttichathans. Temple accounts describe Vishnumaya as the divine child associated with Shiva and Parvati, a boy-form deity whose vehicle is the bison.
The tradition followed at this kavu is that of the Kanadi family. Sage Konnamuthappan, also remembered as Koonamuthappan, is said to have sought from the family goddess the moola mantra and the dhyana mantra for pleasing Chathan, the son of Parameswara. After penance he returned to Peringottukara and consecrated Vishnumaya on the ground where the Kanadi family house now stands. Copper plates and palmyra-leaf records about Konnacharya Swamy are said to be kept at the kavu. The Madathipathi is described as the eldest male descendant of that line. The chief priest named in current temple notices is Brahmasree Dr. K.K. Vishnubharatheeya Swamy.
Published accounts name Bhadrakali, Bhuvaneswari, Kukshikalpam, Nagaraja, Nagayakshi, and Brahmarakshas among the sub-shrines, along with the 390 Kuttichathans. The kavu keeps a long local link with Sree Rama Temple at Thriprayar. When the Lord of Thriprayar leaves for the Arattupuzha Pooram, rites at Kanadi Kavu are paused in the belief that Chathan Swamy accompanies him, and a traditional para is offered at the kavu. Pilgrims bound for Sabarimala have also customarily stopped here to seek protection for the journey. The Chathan festival is described as opening with a kavadi procession that sets out from the Thriprayar temple.
Daily worship follows a timetable published on Holy Prasadam: nada thurakkal at 5:30 a.m., first pooja at 8:30 a.m., second pooja at 10:30 a.m., kalpana at 1:00 p.m., closure from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., reopening at 4:30 p.m., deeparadhana at 7:00 p.m., and closure at 8:00 p.m. Some map listings show the premises open until 9:00 p.m. Festival days change this clock, so the office should be asked before travel. Every Tuesday at 12 noon, guruthi is offered to all the Kutti Chathans.
Offerings commonly named for this temple are Roopakalam, Chuttuvilakku, Niramala, Brahmavellattu Karmam, Veethu, Guruthi, Divasapooja, and Pushpanjali. Roopakalam is a coloured-powder figure of Vishnumaya, sometimes drawn with Karimkutty, over which a tantric puja is performed. Booking rates for these vazhipadu appear on Holy Prasadam and can change, so confirm the current list, the queue, and whether a token is required. The temple’s own site is kanadikavu.com. A WhatsApp number published for pooja enquiries is 8089676685.
The year turns on a few named festivals. Thiravellattu Mahotsavam falls on the day of the oracle of Vishnumaya in the Malayalam month of Makaram. After the kavadi arrives and the anointing is done, three days of festivities follow, and devotees gather for the Roopakalam of that season. In Midhunam, three days beginning with the star Uthram mark the consecration-day festival. Pattutsavam is observed in Thulam. Dates move with the Malayalam calendar and with the oracle, so the year’s notice should be checked on the temple site or by phone.
Dress, photography, and offering parcels should follow the rule posted at the gate that day. The shrine’s own notices say devotees of every community are received. A special pooja, annadanam, or a festival-day visit is best fixed a day or more ahead, because the queue and the day’s rites can fill early.
