## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The Kalpathy Heritage Riverside Walk is a cultural and heritage experience through Kalpathy, Kerala's first declared heritage village, located about 3 kilometres from Palakkad town on the tranquil banks of the Kalpathy River. Renowned for its well-preserved Tamil Brahmin agraharams, traditional architecture, and centuries-old temple traditions, Kalpathy offers visitors an opportunity to explore one of Kerala's most historically significant settlements while enjoying a peaceful riverside atmosphere. The heritage walk takes visitors through the village's four historic agraharams—Old Kalpathy, New Kalpathy, Chathapuram, and Govindarajapuram—where rows of traditional houses with sloping tiled roofs, continuous verandahs, wooden doors, and narrow streets preserve the distinctive architectural character of a historic Brahmin settlement. Walking through these streets provides insight into the community's unique cultural heritage, which traces its origins to Tamil Brahmin families who migrated from Thanjavur and settled in the region under the patronage of the rulers of Palakkad. One of the highlights of the walk is the scenic stretch along the Kalpathy River, where visitors can pause to appreciate the calm riverside setting, enjoy photography, and experience the quiet ambience that has shaped the village's cultural identity for generations. The river has played an important role in the daily life, rituals, and festivals of the settlement, adding to the heritage value of the area. At the heart of the village stands the historic Sree Viswanatha Swamy Temple, a revered Shiva temple that serves as Kalpathy's spiritual and cultural centre. The temple is closely associated with the village's traditions and is best known for the annual Kalpathy Ratholsavam, one of Kerala's most famous chariot festivals, which attracts thousands of devotees and visitors every November. Throughout the year, however, the heritage village offers a quieter experience where visitors can appreciate its architecture, temple surroundings, riverside landscape, and traditional way of life without the festival crowds. Early mornings are particularly favoured for the heritage walk, when the narrow streets, temple surroundings, and riverbanks remain peaceful and the cool weather enhances the walking experience. Visitors entering the temple are expected to follow its traditional dress regulations, with men required to wear a mundu (dhoti) and remain bare-chested, while women are expected to wear a saree or other traditional attire, in accordance with temple customs. Easily accessible from Palakkad town, the Kalpathy Heritage Riverside Walk appeals to heritage enthusiasts, photographers, architecture lovers, cultural tourists, historians, and travellers interested in experiencing Kerala's living traditions in an authentic setting. As temple timings, visitor regulations, heritage programmes, and festival schedules may vary throughout the year, visitors are encouraged to verify the latest information with the temple authorities and local tourism offices before planning their visit to the Kalpathy Heritage Riverside Walk.
