Kallada Fishing Tournament

Kallada Fishing Tournament is an angling competition on the Kallada reservoir at Thenmala, in eastern Kollam. Angling means a rod, a line, and a hook. It is not a net, and it is not a trap. The water is the reservoir of the Kallada Irrigation Project, held by the Parappar dam, also called the Thenmala dam, beside Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary. You fish only if the rules for that water, and the rules of the competition, both allow it.

A tournament has rules. They say who may fish, what tackle is allowed, how long the session lasts, how fish are weighed or measured, and whether fish are kept or returned. Those rules come from the organiser. No target species is named here, and no prize fish is named here. Do not travel for a particular fish. A competition does not guarantee a catch. You can fish the whole session and land nothing. That is still angling.

October is the month for the competition. The reservoir level changes with rain and with irrigation. A bank that was fishable last week can be underwater, or it can be dry mud. Sanctuary rules and dam rules can limit gear and season. The month does not open the water. Permission is required. No permit comes with the event. A page that names the tournament is not a licence.

Thenmala boating, when it runs, is a separate ticket. The boat is not a fishing platform, and a boat ticket does not enter you in the tournament. Bank fishing and boat fishing are different. Neither is chosen here. Bring nothing on the assumption that a counter will supply a rod, a reel, or bait. If the organiser supplies them, they will say so. Spectators stay clear of lines. A cast needs empty air behind the angler and empty water in front. Do not feed fish, and do not stand on dam walls and intakes. Those are working structures.

Other people come to this reservoir to watch birds. This visit is the fishing competition, not that watch. Do not turn a rod into a way to get closer to a bird.

Aryankavu railway station is about 15 kilometres from the Kallada dam at Thenmala. Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is about 80 kilometres away. Buses use the Thenmala bus stop. Rooms named in the area are Thenmala Ecoresort, Kandamath Heritage Resort, and Thenmala Heritage. A room overlooking the reservoir is not permission to fish.

Permission is the first piece of kit, ahead of the rod. October is the month associated with the competition, and it does not by itself allow a hook in the Kallada reservoir. Dam rules and sanctuary rules can say no. The organiser, not this account, says who may fish, what tackle is allowed, how long the session lasts, and whether a fish is kept or returned. Bring the rod you intend to use unless you have been told a counter will supply one. Thenmala's boat, when it runs, will not take your entry. Aryankavu is about 15 kilometres from the dam. The bus stop and the three Thenmala hotels get you to the area. They do not get you onto the bank with a line. Ask which day, and ask about the exact stretch.

Angling here is one person, a rod, and a hook. A net is a different method and not the tournament. No prize species is named, so do not travel for a particular fish. A session can end with an empty hand. That is still a result. Spectators stand where they will not be hit by a cast. Dam walls and intakes are working structures, not seating.

Ask who is organising the tournament, which day in October is used, and whether hooks are allowed on the stretch you have in mind. If hooks are not allowed, there is no tournament for you on that bank.
