DESCRIPTION:Kaliyootu is a distinctive ritual festival associated with the
Sarkara Devi Temple at Chirayinkeezhu in Thiruvananthapuram district\, whe
re the presiding deity is Goddess Bhadrakali. The festival is traditionall
y held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham\, generally falling in February o
r March\, and is centred on ritual observances and a dramatic presentation
depicting the origin of Kali and her confrontation with the demon Darika.
The narrative represents the struggle between good and evil and forms the
central dramatic element of the festival. Kerala Tourism records that Kal
iyootu was introduced at Sarkara by Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma in 17
48\, following a tradition that existed in northern Kerala and was subsequ
ently brought to the southern part of the former Travancore region. Accord
ing to the traditional account associated with the festival\, the king vow
ed to conduct a Kaliyootu at Sarkara after seeking the goddess’s blessin
gs before a campaign and fulfilling that vow after his victory. The festiv
al extends through a sequence of rituals and ceremonies lasting up to nine
days\, with the dramatic enactment forming an important part of the obser
vance. The festival is also associated with the offering of the first harv
est to the goddess\, connecting the ritual with agricultural traditions an
d seasonal cycles. Sarkara Devi Temple itself is an important Bhadrakali s
hrine in southern Kerala and is administered by the Travancore Devaswom Bo
ard. Its distinctive architecture…\n\nEvent page: https://app.eventifypl
