About this event
Jackfruit Cluster Tour is listed as a seasonal agro and farm experience at Alayamon in Anchal block, Pathanapuram taluk, Kollam district, Kerala. The listing uses the place name Alayamon Jackfruit Farm and the line “different jackfruit varieties tour,” with April to July given as the season. Public maps for this listing open on Alayamon village. Village records name rubber as the main crop, with paddy and coconut next, and they record forest on part of the land. No published farm, variety list, guide, fee, or visitor timetable is attached to Alayamon, so anyone planning a jackfruit walk should ask a local grower before travelling.
A jackfruit is the compound fruit of Artocarpus heterophyllus, the plavu of Kerala homesteads. The English name comes from the Malayalam word chakka. The fruit forms on the trunk and on the thick branches, and one fruit is a mass of many flowers fused together. Inside, the edible bulbs sit around large seeds, held in a rind that gives off sticky latex when it is cut. Growers sort trees by the feel of those bulbs. Varikka has firm, crunchy flakes and is the usual table fruit. Koozha has soft, fibrous flakes and is preferred for cooking. An intermediate form is called Navarikka. Unripe fruit is cooked as a vegetable, in thoran, and as chips. Ripe fruit is eaten fresh. The seeds are boiled or curried. The tree also gives timber used for furniture and for instruments such as the mridangam.
Among growers, a cluster jack is a tree that sets several fruits close together, often medium-sized fruit with sweet flakes. Kerala surveys have marked trees for that habit, and also for early fruit, gumless flakes, and fruit that ripens outside the main months. The familiar named types include Thenvarikka, kept for dessert because the flakes are very sweet, Muttom Varikka, a firm type first picked out at Muttom, and Singapore Jack, a smaller tree that bears early. Rudrakshi, also called Thamarachakka, is a small round form. In southern Kerala, soft Koozha trees are more common in homesteads, while firm Varikka is met more often farther north. A varieties tour would mean walking from tree to tree and comparing these differences. Nothing published shows that such a walk, or a planted variety garden, has been arranged under the name Alayamon Jackfruit Farm.
The usual Kerala harvest peaks from March to May. Some trees fruit from January, and a few carry fruit into July. April to July therefore sits across the later part of the real season, but on this listing that range is only a directory window. Fruit from the later months is often less wanted for the table. Kerala declared jackfruit its official fruit on 21 March 2018. The announcement used the word chakka so that green fruit and ripe fruit were both included. Most of the crop still comes from courtyard trees rather than from dedicated orchards. Chips, jam, pickle, and frozen bulbs are made in many parts of the state. Those products are a separate trade, and they do not by themselves show a visitor farm at Alayamon.
Alayamon is a gram panchayat village on the inland side of Kollam. Buses run through the settlement, and Punalur is the nearest town with a railway station. Anchal, a short ride away, is the practical bus and stay point. The fields around the village are rubber, paddy, and coconut. Travellers searching for a jackfruit cluster tour in Kollam, jackfruit varieties in Kerala, or a farm visit near Anchal should treat Alayamon Jackfruit Farm as a directory name. Ask in the village whether any grower is receiving visitors that season, and which trees are actually in fruit.
