About this place
Illikkal Kallu is one of the most spectacular hilltop viewpoints in Kottayam district, Kerala, situated in the Western Ghats near Melukavu at an elevation of approximately 1,200 metres (about 4,000 feet) above sea level. Contrary to popular claims, the hill is not 6,000 feet high; the widely accepted elevation is around 4,000 feet. Renowned for its dramatic rock formations, breathtaking panoramic views, and mist-covered landscapes, Illikkal Kallu has become one of Kerala's most sought-after eco-tourism and adventure destinations. The name "Illikkal Kallu" refers to the massive rock formation that crowns the hill, where three distinctive rock masses—Kuda Kallu, Koon Kallu, and the narrow rock bridge known as Narakapalam (Bridge of Hell)—form the area's most iconic landmarks. According to local folklore, a portion of the original rock split apart naturally, leaving behind these striking formations that continue to fascinate visitors. The approach to the summit involves a short uphill trek from the designated parking area, passing through rolling grasslands, rocky slopes, and scenic viewpoints that showcase the pristine beauty of the Western Ghats. From the summit, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views of deep valleys, forested hills, plantations, and distant mountain ranges, while on exceptionally clear days, it is traditionally believed that parts of the Arabian Sea may be visible on the western horizon. Illikkal Kallu is particularly famous for its spectacular sunrises, golden sunsets, drifting clouds, and frequent mist that create an ever-changing landscape, making it a paradise for photographers and nature enthusiasts. The hill is also rich in biodiversity, supporting native flora and fauna typical of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage region recognized for its ecological significance. Managed as an eco-tourism destination, the site features safety railings, designated viewpoints, and regulated visitor access to protect both tourists and the fragile environment. The best time to visit is between October and February, when the weather is cool, visibility is generally better, and trekking conditions are favourable. During the monsoon season, visitors should exercise extra caution due to slippery rocks, strong winds, and dense fog. Today, Illikkal Kallu stands as one of Kerala's premier hill destinations, offering an unforgettable blend of adventure, natural beauty, panoramic scenery, and geological uniqueness, making it an essential destination for trekkers, photographers, nature lovers, and travellers exploring the highlands of Kottayam.
