About this place

Idimuzhangan Nights is a signature jungle camping and trekking programme conducted inside the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary, one of Kerala's most biodiverse protected forests located in the Kollam district within the Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-recognised biodiversity hotspot. Managed by the Kerala Forest Department as part of its eco-tourism initiatives, this immersive experience combines guided trekking through dense tropical evergreen forests with an overnight stay at the scenic Idimuzhangan Camp, situated near the tranquil Shendurney Lake (Parappar Reservoir). The campsite can be reached either by a guided forest trek or by boat across the reservoir, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the untouched wilderness of the Western Ghats. The package includes trekking, birdwatching, butterfly watching, boating, campfire experiences (subject to forest regulations), meals, and accommodation, all under the supervision of trained guides and forest officials to ensure visitor safety and environmental conservation. During the journey, visitors may encounter diverse flora and fauna, including elephants, gaur, Nilgiri langurs, lion-tailed macaques, hornbills, and numerous endemic bird and butterfly species, making it an ideal experience for wildlife photographers, nature lovers, and adventure seekers. The best time to visit is between October and March when the weather is pleasant and trekking conditions are favourable. Advance booking is highly recommended, as the programme operates with limited slots and may be suspended during the monsoon or due to wildlife activity and weather conditions. Idimuzhangan Nights is regarded as one of Kerala's finest eco-tourism experiences, offering an unforgettable combination of adventure, responsible tourism, forest camping, and wildlife exploration in the pristine landscapes of Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary near Thenmala.
