## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Apiculture Training & Beekeeping Workshops are scientific capacity-building programmes organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to promote sustainable beekeeping, improve honey production, strengthen pollinator conservation, and generate additional livelihood opportunities for farmers and rural communities across India. Functioning as frontline agricultural extension centres, KVKs play a vital role in transferring research-based technologies from ICAR institutes to farming communities through practical demonstrations, vocational training, and field-oriented skill development programmes. Apiculture has emerged as one of the important focus areas of many KVKs because beekeeping offers a low-investment, high-potential agricultural enterprise that complements crop cultivation while enhancing pollination, biodiversity, and farm income. Through structured training workshops, participants receive comprehensive knowledge on the scientific principles of honey bee biology, colony establishment, apiary management, and sustainable honey production using recommended beekeeping practices. The programmes are designed for a wide range of beneficiaries, including farmers, rural youth, women entrepreneurs, self-help groups (SHGs), Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), students, unemployed graduates, and aspiring beekeepers who wish to establish commercial or small-scale apiaries. Training modules typically cover the identification of important honey bee species reared in India, including the indigenous Apis cerana indica and the European honey bee Apis mellifera, while also introducing participants to the ecological significance of stingless bees and wild pollinators. Practical sessions focus on hive construction, installation of bee colonies, seasonal colony management, queen bee identification and replacement, swarm prevention, colony multiplication, supplemental feeding during nectar scarcity, disease and pest monitoring, hygienic honey harvesting, wax processing, and post-harvest handling techniques that ensure the production of high-quality honey. Participants also gain practical experience in using protective clothing, smokers, hive tools, honey extractors, queen excluders, feeders, and other essential beekeeping equipment required for safe and efficient apiary management. Many KVKs maintain demonstration apiaries where trainees can observe live colonies, inspect brood frames, understand colony behaviour, and practice hive inspections under the supervision of experienced scientists and subject matter specialists. These hands-on demonstrations enable participants to develop confidence in handling honey bee colonies while learning scientifically validated management techniques that improve colony health and productivity. In addition to honey production, ICAR-KVK workshops emphasize the indispensable role of honey bees in pollination, explaining how managed bee colonies significantly improve the yield and quality of numerous agricultural and horticultural crops, including fruits, vegetables, oilseeds, spices, pulses, plantation crops, and seed crops. Pollination by honey bees contributes directly to enhanced agricultural productivity, improved biodiversity, ecosystem stability, and long-term food security, making beekeeping an integral component of climate-resilient and sustainable farming systems. Training programmes also introduce participants to value-added bee products such as beeswax, bee pollen, propolis, royal jelly, and bee venom, highlighting opportunities for product diversification, processing, packaging, branding, quality assurance, and marketing that can increase rural income and promote agri-entrepreneurship. Many KVKs integrate their apiculture programmes with national initiatives such as the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM) and collaborate with the National Bee Board (NBB), State Departments of Agriculture and Horticulture, agricultural universities, and other government agencies to expand awareness of scientific beekeeping and strengthen the apiculture value chain. Field visits to successful apiaries, honey processing units, and demonstration farms are frequently included to expose trainees to commercial beekeeping practices and real-world business models. Extension literature, technical manuals, and follow-up advisory services further assist participants in adopting improved technologies after completing the training. By encouraging environmentally responsible beekeeping, conserving pollinator populations, promoting scientific hive management, and strengthening rural entrepreneurship, ICAR-KVK Apiculture Training & Beekeeping Workshops make a significant contribution to sustainable agriculture and integrated farming systems in India. These programmes continue to bridge the gap between agricultural research and field-level implementation by equipping farmers and rural entrepreneurs with practical…
