About this place

Hosdurg Fort, also known as Kanhangad Fort, is a historic fortification in Kanhangad, Kasaragod district, associated with the Ikkeri Nayakas of the Bednur or Keladi kingdom. The fort is believed to have been established by Somasekhara Nayaka after the Ikkeri rulers gained control of the region, and it formed part of a wider network of forts that reflected the military and political importance of northern Kerala. Situated on a low hillock, the fort is now largely in ruins, but its surviving structures continue to reveal important aspects of Nayaka-era military architecture. One of its most distinctive features is the series of round bastions, whose form resembles those found at the nearby Bekal and Kumbala forts. A watchtower associated with the fort provides views across the surrounding landscape, while wall walkways and other remnants offer an indication of how the fortification was organised. Caves cut into the lateritic formation beneath the south-western corner bastion are another notable feature of the site. Kerala Tourism describes Hosdurg as a Dravidian-style fort and notes its strategic importance during successive periods of regional and colonial history. Its position near the coast and waterways contributed to its importance in a region connected with trade, while the fort remained strategically significant even during the periods of Tipu Sultan and British rule. The fort also has a strong connection with the surrounding cultural landscape. The Ikkeri Nayakas are associated with the construction of the Poonkavanam Karpooreswara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, located to the south-west of the fort. The nearby Nithyananda Ashram, known for its laterite caves, adds another distinctive element to the area’s heritage character. Today, the surviving bastions, walls, watchtower and laterite caves provide a tangible link to Kanhangad’s historical past, although the fort should be experienced primarily as a historic ruin rather than as an intact military complex. Its architectural relationship with other Nayaka forts in Kasaragod, association with the Ikkeri dynasty and proximity to religious and cultural landmarks make it an interesting heritage site for visitors exploring northern Kerala. Hosdurg Fort is particularly suited to travellers interested in regional history, historic fortifications and lesser-known heritage sites, offering an opportunity to examine the remains of a Nayaka stronghold within the evolving cultural landscape of Kanhangad.
