About this place

Hosdurg Fort, also known as Kanhangad Fort, is a historic fort located in Kanhangad town in Kasaragod district, Kerala, India, and stands as an important reminder of the region’s medieval history and coastal trade influence. The fort was built by Somashekara Nayaka of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty of Ikkeri during the period when the Keladi rulers controlled parts of the Malabar region. Strategically constructed on a slightly elevated area, the fort served as a defensive structure and administrative center, helping the rulers maintain control over nearby coastal trade routes and surrounding territories. Although much of the original fort structure is now in ruins, its remaining walls and historical setting still reflect the architectural style and military importance of forts built in the Malabar region during that era. Over time, the area around Hosdurg Fort gained further prominence due to the establishment of the Nithyanandasram, a well-known spiritual center located near the fort premises. The ashram is particularly famous for its 45 caves carved into laterite rock, which were created under the guidance of the spiritual leader Swami Nityananda. These caves are arranged in multiple levels and include meditation spaces, prayer halls, and small chambers, making them a unique attraction that blends spirituality with architectural curiosity. Today, the caves and the surrounding ashram complex attract devotees, tourists, and visitors interested in spiritual retreats, meditation, and historical exploration. The location offers a peaceful atmosphere with views of the surrounding town and greenery, making it a calm place for reflection and sightseeing. Hosdurg Fort and the nearby Nithyanandasram together form an interesting cultural landmark in Kanhangad, representing a blend of historical heritage, religious significance, and local tourism. Visitors often explore the fort ruins, walk through the cave structures, and spend time in the tranquil environment of the ashram. The site is also included in travel itineraries for those exploring Kasaragod district’s historical and spiritual attractions, along with nearby beaches, temples, and forts that highlight the rich cultural history of northern Kerala. Overall, Hosdurg Fort (Kanhangad Fort) stands as a historically significant site in Kasaragod, remembered both for its connection to the Keladi Nayaka dynasty and for the unique network of 45 meditation caves at Nithyanandasram that continue to attract visitors from across the region
