## About this event

The Hill Palace Museum at Thrippunithura, Ernakulam, is a major heritage and ethno-archaeological museum that preserves the history of the erstwhile Kochi royal family and Kerala’s wider cultural heritage. Built in 1865, the Hill Palace served as the official residence of the Maharajas of Kochi and today forms a sprawling complex of 49 buildings set across more than 52 acres of landscaped and terraced grounds. The architecture reflects a blend of traditional Kerala and Dutch influences, with distinctive features associated with a royal residence, including spacious halls, courtyards, wooden elements and traditional domestic spaces. The oldest building in the complex is an ettukettu, a traditional Kerala architectural form, which houses the heritage museum. The museum’s extensive collections include oil paintings, murals, sculptures, manuscripts, coins, swords, crowns, royal belongings, wooden artefacts and other objects associated with the former Kochi kingdom. Its archaeological collections also include ancient ceramics, megalithic memorial stones and artefacts connected with early cultures, while dedicated galleries present subjects such as wood carving, manuscripts, epigraphy, jewellery and contemporary art. The collections provide insight into Kerala’s artistic traditions, material culture, royal life and archaeological heritage rather than focusing exclusively on the Cochin dynasty. The palace complex also includes a pre-historic park, heritage museum, children’s park and deer park, giving visitors opportunities to explore both its cultural collections and landscaped surroundings. Kerala Tourism describes Hill Palace as Kerala’s first heritage museum and an extensive ethno-archaeological showcase. The setting allows visitors to see how a royal residence functioned, with spaces such as the poomukham or sit-out, internal halls, a prayer room, royal kitchen, dining hall and cabinet hall forming part of the architectural experience. The museum is particularly significant for its combination of royal history and archaeological collections, bringing together objects from different periods within one historic complex. It also provides a useful introduction to the political and cultural history of the former Kochi kingdom and the artistic traditions that developed in Kerala. Visitors should allow time to explore the galleries as well as the palace grounds, since the complex extends well beyond the principal museum building. The Hill Palace is therefore not simply a former royal residence but a substantial museum complex where archaeology, architecture, art and the history of Kochi come together in one of Thrippunithura’s most important heritage landmarks.
