## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Gavi, in Pathanamthitta district, is a forest-based eco-tourism destination managed through the Kerala Forest Development Corporation and situated within the larger landscape of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Surrounded by tropical forests, grasslands, cardamom and tea plantations, hills, valleys and tranquil water bodies, the destination offers visitors an opportunity to experience the Western Ghats through carefully managed nature-based activities. Gavi is particularly known for trekking, wildlife watching, boating, outdoor camping and other guided eco-tourism programmes rather than conventional sightseeing. The forest landscape supports a rich variety of wildlife, and the official Gavi-Kakki eco-tourism programme notes more than 260 species of birds, including great pied hornbills, woodpeckers and kingfishers. Visitors may also encounter species such as elephants, Nilgiri tahr and lion-tailed macaques, although wildlife sightings are naturally dependent on conditions and chance. Boating on the Kochu Pamba and Gavi-area waters offers a quieter way to appreciate the surrounding forested hills and provides opportunities for birdwatching and landscape observation. Trekking programmes take visitors into the forest environment under regulated conditions, while camping options allow participants to spend time within the natural setting without leaving the designated eco-tourism framework. The Gavi experience also reflects the importance of community participation in conservation-oriented tourism, with local and tribal communities involved in activities associated with the project. The area's remoteness and protected-forest setting mean that visitors are expected to observe strict environmental and access regulations. Gavi lies within Ranni Reserve Forest and forms part of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, so entry and activities are controlled through designated forest access points and approved programmes. The official Gavi-Kakki portal currently limits daily vehicle entry and requires visitors entering through Angamuzhy to obtain the appropriate ticket before proceeding into the forest. Outdoor programmes are also restricted during night hours. Gavi's appeal lies less in fast-paced adventure and more in the opportunity to move slowly through a protected mountain landscape, observe wildlife habitats and experience the quiet character of the Western Ghats. For travellers interested in responsible nature tourism, its combination of forest trails, wildlife observation, boating and regulated camping provides a distinctive way to explore one of Kerala's important eco-tourism landscapes.
