## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The Federation of Indigenous Apiculturists (FIA) is a registered non-profit organization based in Kerala, India, dedicated to advancing sustainable apiculture, conserving indigenous honey bee species, and strengthening the livelihoods of beekeepers through scientific training, technological innovation, and market support. Established in 2008 under the Travancore–Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act, the federation has grown into one of Kerala's leading beekeeping organizations with more than 2,500 life members and district-level committees across all fourteen districts of the state. FIA is recognized by the National Bee Board (NBB) and the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), reflecting its commitment to promoting environmentally responsible beekeeping practices that contribute to biodiversity conservation, agricultural sustainability, and rural economic development. The federation works extensively to encourage the adoption of Good Apicultural Practices (GAP) by integrating traditional knowledge with modern scientific methods, enabling beekeepers to improve honey quality, maintain healthy bee colonies, and increase farm productivity while protecting the ecological role of pollinators. A major focus of FIA is the conservation and promotion of indigenous honey bee species, including the Indian honey bee (Apis cerana indica), stingless bees (Tetragonula species), rock bees (Apis dorsata), and little bees (Apis florea), alongside responsible management of the European honey bee (Apis mellifera), recognizing that diverse pollinator populations are essential for maintaining ecosystem balance, enhancing crop pollination, and supporting food security. The federation actively promotes scientific beekeeping through structured skill development programmes such as Beekeepers Orientation Training (BOT), Beekeepers Refresher Training (BRT), Vocational Beekeeping Training (VBT), and specialized hands-on training in commercial meliponiculture (stingless beekeeping), equipping beginners, students, farmers, women entrepreneurs, and experienced apiculturists with practical knowledge in colony establishment, seasonal hive management, queen bee rearing, disease and pest monitoring, hygienic honey harvesting, value addition, quality assurance, entrepreneurship, and business development. FIA also provides advisory services, technical guidance, disease-free bee colonies, beekeeping equipment, and technology dissemination to improve production efficiency while ensuring sustainable management of bee populations. Beyond capacity building, the federation supports the marketing of honey, beeswax, propolis, pollen, royal jelly, bee venom, and other hive products by facilitating market linkages, promoting certified quality standards, and encouraging value-added processing that enhances the income potential of rural beekeepers. Through its certification initiatives, FIA encourages member apiaries to adopt scientifically validated beekeeping standards that enable producers to market premium-quality honey and hive products with greater consumer confidence. The organization also publishes educational resources, newsletters, and technical information while organizing conferences, Honey Fest events, community outreach programmes, and awareness campaigns that highlight the ecological and economic importance of honey bees. In recent years, FIA has expanded its emphasis on stingless beekeeping by setting ambitious goals to develop thousands of stingless bee farmers across Kerala, recognizing the growing demand for stingless bee honey and its value in diversified rural enterprises. The federation collaborates with agricultural scientists, researchers, universities, government agencies, and local communities to encourage innovation in apiculture while supporting national initiatives that promote honey production, crop pollination, and sustainable agriculture. Practical skill development programmes conducted for organizations such as Kudumbashree further demonstrate FIA's commitment to empowering women and rural communities through commercial beekeeping and value-added honey production. By promoting pollinator-friendly farming systems, protecting native bee diversity, supporting research and technology transfer, and creating opportunities for entrepreneurship, the Federation of Indigenous Apiculturists continues to play a significant role in strengthening Kerala's apiculture sector. Its integrated approach combines biodiversity conservation, scientific beekeeping, indigenous knowledge, quality honey production, rural livelihood enhancement, and environmental stewardship, making the federation an important institution for advancing sustainable apiculture and pollinator conservation in India while contributing to improved agricultural productivity, ecological resilience, and the long-term development of the beekeeping industry.
