About this event

Saint Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception, born Anna Muttathupadathu, was an Indian religious sister of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church and the first Indian woman to be canonized a saint by the Catholic Church. Born on 19 August 1910 at Kudamalur in Kottayam district, she was raised in a Catholic family and developed a strong religious vocation from an early age. She entered the Franciscan Clarist Congregation and eventually joined the Clarist convent at Bharananganam, where she spent the later part of her life. Alphonsa experienced serious health problems and prolonged physical suffering, which she accepted as part of her spiritual life with remarkable patience and devotion. She died at the Franciscan Clarist Convent in Bharananganam on 28 July 1946, aged 35. Her reputation for holiness spread after her death, and the tomb where she was buried gradually became a place of pilgrimage. Pope John Paul II declared her Blessed during a ceremony in Kottayam on 8 February 1986. On 12 October 2008, Pope Benedict XVI canonized Alphonsa in St Peter’s Square in Vatican City, presenting her as the first Indian woman saint of the Catholic Church. Her canonization established Bharananganam as an important pilgrimage destination for devotees from India and abroad. The St. Alphonsa Shrine Church and Pilgrim Centre preserves her tomb, while the nearby Franciscan Clarist Convent contains the room where she lived and died and a museum displaying objects associated with her life. The shrine receives pilgrims throughout the year, with particularly large numbers visiting around her annual feast and death anniversary on 28 July. Religious observances at the pilgrimage centre include Holy Mass, prayer, novenas and other devotional activities. Saint Alphonsa is especially remembered for her patience, fortitude and perseverance amid suffering, qualities that have contributed to her enduring spiritual appeal. Her life and legacy form an important part of the Syro-Malabar Catholic heritage of Kerala, while her canonization has given her significance far beyond the region. Today, Bharananganam remains closely associated with her memory, offering pilgrims a place for prayer, reflection and devotion. The shrine, convent, museum and surrounding religious institutions together provide an opportunity to understand the life of a woman whose faith, endurance and spiritual commitment became central to one of Kerala’s best-known Christian pilgrimage traditions.
