## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Edappally Maha Ganapathy Temple, also known as Edappally Kovilakam Sree Maha Ganapathy Temple, is a historic shrine dedicated to Lord Ganapathy in Edappally, Kochi, and is closely associated with the Edappally Swaroopam, the former ruling family of the region. The temple stands within the traditional precincts of the Edappally royal household and is regarded as the family shrine of the Edappally rulers, whose history and patronage remain an important part of the cultural heritage of the area. Kerala Tourism records the Ganapathy temple among the prominent temples historically patronised by the Edappally Thampurans.

The presiding deity faces east, and Ganapathy is worshipped in the Hindu tradition as an auspicious deity associated with wisdom, beginnings and the removal of obstacles. The shrine has a particularly intimate character, with its religious importance centred on regular worship and traditional offerings rather than large-scale public festivities. Among the offerings associated with the temple are Ganapathy Homam, Unniyappam, Udayasthamana Pooja, Pushpanjali, Niramala, Chuttuvilakku, Koottappam and offerings involving coconuts. Udayasthamana Pooja, conducted through a sequence of rituals extending from morning towards evening, is regarded as one of the notable devotional offerings at the shrine, while Ganapathy Homam and Unniyappam are also particularly associated with worship here. Traditional accounts further connect the temple with the Edappally royal family’s devotion to Ganapathy and with the legends surrounding the Edappally Swaroopam. The shrine is also associated in popular accounts with Kottarathil Sankunni’s Aithihyamala, reflecting the wider body of legends and oral traditions surrounding Kerala’s temples. Rather than presenting the shrine as a major festival venue, it is more appropriate to understand Edappally Maha Ganapathy Temple as a functioning place of worship where customary poojas and offerings form the heart of devotional life. The temple’s relatively private and traditional character distinguishes it from the large public temple complexes of Kerala that attract extensive festival crowds. Devotees visit throughout the year for prayers and offerings, while the members of the Edappally royal family retain their traditional connection with the shrine. Situated amid the rapidly urbanised landscape of modern Kochi, the temple offers a glimpse into the older religious and cultural traditions associated with Edappally and its former royal household. Visitors should approach the shrine respectfully, observe temple customs and follow the prevailing arrangements for darshan and worship.
